Massive effort by Karalino for fourth in the NZ Oaks
Following her big run for second to stable-mate Communique (Redwood) in the Sunline Vase (Gr. 3, 2100m), Karalino (3 f Zacinto – Tawny Run, by Runyon) produced a terrific effort for fourth in the $400,000 New Zealand Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m) last Saturday at Trentham.
Trained by Stephen Autridge and ridden by Johnathan Parkes, she worked in the early stages to take up a handy position on the inner and found again on straightening to finish in a dominant group of four at the line.
Friday night at Moonee Valley, Melbourne:
Weather: overcast, track: Good4, rail: true
10.00 p.m. (NZ time) R6 3 Mrs Beckham (3 f Toronado – Posh, by Zabeel), T: Ellerton/Zahra, Flemington. J: Chris Symons; the winner of two from seven, bred and owned by Kevin, is second-up in the $160,000 Alexandra Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m). She recorded consecutive victories over 1400 metres in December and January at Caulfield, and won a trial before resuming with a close seventh in the Kewney Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) at Flemington. NZ TAB fixed odds: $9.00 & $2.80.
Saturday at Riccarton:
Weather: overcast, track: Dead4, rail: out 8 metres
1.47 p.m. R4 8 Baby Menaka (5 m Zed – Menaka, by Montjeu), T: John & Karen Parsons, Balcairn. J: Chris Johnson; resumed with a good fifth in the Rating 65 2000 metres before a strong victory in the corresponding race on 21 February, and overcame a chequered run to finish strongly late for second in the Rating 65 and Jumpers 2000 metres on 5 March – all three at Riccarton. Although up in grade for the $25,000 Rating 72 2000 metres, and awkwardly drawn (9), she rates a top four chance. Fixed odds: $7.50 & $2.50.
3.35 p.m. R7 5 Pippi Rea (6 g Pins – Smitten Kitten, by Volksraad), T: John & Karen Parsons, Balcairn, J: Krishna Mudhoo; was out of contention after slipping at the start on 8 March in the Open 1200 metres at Gore, and contests the $35,000 Open 1200 metres. He finished strongly for second here three starts ago and his best would see him competitive from barrier five in a solid field. Fixed odds: $17.00 & $4.50.
Monday at Wingatui:
Weather: overcast, track: Dead4, rail: out 3 metres from 1400m – 300m, cutaway rail straight.
3.48 p.m. R6 11 Stirling Lady (4 m Falkirk – Pow Wow Jane, by Flying Spur), T: John & Karen Parsons, Balcairn. J: Krishna Mudhoo; was given a good ride from the outside gate (13) when finishing fifth in the Rating 65 and Jumpers 2000 metres on 8 March at Gore, and contests the $11,000 Rating 72 2200 metres. Improving up in trip and ideally drawn (4), but may be better suited back in 65 grade.
We wish you all the best for the weekend.
