Level Up Strategy

Practice making inferences! Creative Language Class posted recently about an activity where students practice making inferences based on a picture. Although this is not a reading strategy - inferring is a high level skill. Take an interesting picture - add a thought bubble and let the students be creative! Their post even includes to some pictures ready to go!

Spanish Immersion Day @ Kettering Fairmont

Level Up Strategies

As I am sure that many of you are aware, there is a district-wide Level Up iniaitive to raise our district report card scores. Each department was asked to prepare a 10-week challenge on how they will support this iniaitive. Although World Languages does not have an Ohio State End of Course Exam, we do have AP/IB courses which are accounted for on the Report Card (Progress to Success). We also have influence on our students success in their core courses, through the work they complete in our classes. As you all know - Reading and writing in a second language supports their first language.

In my effort to support this challenge, I will be providing a reading or writing strategy each week via our newsletter. I am aware that each building has their own challenge, and I am not adding additional challenges for you, merely providing supplemental resources.

ODE Presentational Writing Supports

Within the ODE Model Curriculum for World Languages, there is a document with Presentational Communication Strategies and Activities. There are writing strategies, such as prewriting and revision, along with specific activities shared. Technology-based activities and adaptions for diverse learnings. Even if you are already familiar with this document, you may find something you had overlooked in the past.

Some activities shared:

  1. Mad Libs
  2. Weather forecast journal
  3. Journals
  4. Sentence starters/journal prompts
  5. Building Blocks - start with a simple statement and ask student to build upon it.
  6. Picture prompt
  7. RAFTS
  8. Collaborative documents
  9. And more

NPR Student podcast competition

NPR is inviting students to create a 3-12 minute podcast for grades 5-12. This would be a great opportunity to advocate learning another language!

Katy and I are planning on doing Feeder Patter visit days this year. You can find our tentative schedule below. Although it is our goal to visit each school on the list, we may not make it to all. These visits are not evaluative and are an opportunity for us to listen to your feedback, tell us support you may need and to see the amazing things you all day everyday. Katy will be reaching out to principals to inform them of our visits. I will send a reminder email the week prior to the schools.
