Laura Steckbeck is from the Triangle area in North Carolina and is attending the University of Oklahoma on a four-year National Merit Scholarship. She is currently a junior communication major and biology minor and will graduate in May 2018. Laura looks forward to a career in organizational, internal, or health communication.

Work Experience and Skills

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

Laura is currently an undergraduate research assistant for one of her communication professors. She helped create an online survey using Qualtrics software and learned how to code qualitative research responses. At the end of the spring 2017 semester, she will analyze the survey data and write a comprehensive research paper

THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA HONORS COLLEGE WRITING CENTER

From August 2015 to May 2016, she worked as a Peer Writing Assistant for fellow Honors students. She edited their papers, helped them cultivate their writing skills, and assisted their professors

EINSTEIN BROS. BAGELS

From March 2015 to December 2016, Laura worked at Einstein Bros. Bagels on the OU campus. Through working as a barista, preparing food, and running the cash register, she gained valuable experience in customer service and teamwork

Campus Involvement

CAMPUS ACTIVITIES COUNCIL SPEAKERS BUREAU

Laura has been a member of the Campus Activities Council Speakers Bureau Executive Team since fall 2015

In the spring of 2016, Laura helped bring Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson to the University of Oklahoma for a CAC Speakers Bureau event
  • She serves on Allocations Team, helping allocate funds to other student organizations looking to bring speakers
  • Laura acts as a liaison between Speakers Bureau and other student organizations, helps them execute their events, and contributed to the creation of a Speakers Bureau event planning guide

Alpha Gamma Delta

Laura currently serves as the Vice President of Member Development for her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. She manages programming for the chapter, assists the president, supervises other officers, implements personal development initiatives, and oversees members' well-being.

Laura is an active member in her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta, where she helps other members get the most out of their experience with the chapter
  • Previously, Laura served as the New Member Coordinator, for which she planned three large events, served as a mentor for over 80 members, wrote lesson plans, and led weekly meetings
  • Through Alpha Gamma Delta, she will be attending the LeaderShape leadership conference in May 2017
  • Laura was recently selected to be on OU's Panhellenic Judicial Board, which helps govern the Panhellenic sororities on campus

Study ABroad

Laura participated in the OU Honors College study abroad trip to Oxford, England in 2015. She spent three weeks studying Roman archaeology

Community Service

Every year, Laura participates in The Big Event, which is a campus-wide day of service, and Soonerthon, which is a 12-hour dance marathon benefitting the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Additionally, she helps raise money for Alpha Gamma Delta's philanthropy and volunteers at the Regional Food Bank

Just for Fun

Laura loves using her creativity and made two prize-winning paper dresses for recycled material fashion contests at OU
She also enjoys attending TEDxOU, an independent TEDTalks conference, every year
Laura loves traveling and took a 10-state road trip last summer

High School

Laura graduated from Middle Creek High School in Apex, NC, in 2014. She made the Honor Roll every semester, played volleyball and softball, was the varsity men's coxswain for Triangle Rowing Club, was the secretary for Science National Honor Society, belonged to National Honor Society, was the editor for both the school newspaper and creative arts magazine, won several academic awards, and was an AP Scholar with Honor, and graduated in the top 25 students in her class out of 450
