I enjoyed reading what you were all up to over the break - hockey games, vacations in warm, sunny spots and play dates with friends. Whatever it was, I hope you had a wonderful and restful Christmas Break. Welcome back!
If you have not received a class photo, please let me know. I sent home a class photo with those who ordered individual photo packages in December but still have a few class photos left. Email me and I will send one home with your child.
Our Popcorn Day
Just a reminder that our Popcorn Sale Day is on Friday, January 27th! If there are any parents who are available to bag popcorn in the morning, please contact me. I would only need you until around 10am or earlier. Students will go around to classes to count the amount of bags you will need to make. I will sell them at morning recess to the masses.
Family Magic Show
Just a reminder that ticket orders for the Magic Show are due on Thursday, January 19th. Tickets are only $5 and you are able to order a pizza supper to complete this magical evening. The Family Magic Show is on Thursday, February 2nd. Dinner starts at 6pm. The show starts at 6:30pm.
The students are wrapping up their stories. They learned about the writing process and took pride in their published work. There may just be some Giller Prize award winners in the bunch. We hope to schedule a date to share our stories with the residents at Revera Retirement Home next month.
Next, we will turn our attention to Report Writing; learning about non-fiction text (table of contents, index, titles and subtitles) and KWL charts (what I already KNOW, what I WANT to know and what I have LEARNED).
We are currently working on 2D shapes. The students already seem to have a good grasp on classifying and sorting 2D shapes by attributes, which is why we may have our test very shortly. Please look out for when we will have our test in your child's agenda. I will give a few days notice prior to. I apologize that the previous two tests have not yet been sent home for your review. I have been backed up with marking as some students have been away on holidays or illnesses. However, I promise they will go out prior to the report cards.
Social Studies and science
The Grade 2 students are continuing with Traditions and Celebrations. Before the break, we discussed the different celebrations that people observed in our class and found similarities and differences between them. They will now examine traditions in their families and create a "Family Scrapbook". This project went home with your child on Friday. Please try to have it completed by Friday, January 27th.
The Grade 1 students will take some time learning about the milestones they have achieved in their lives (e.g. first words, new addition to the family, first day of school). They will create a timeline of these events. This project also went home on Friday. Please have the interview questions completed by Thursday, January 19th so we may work on the timeline during class.
As an extension to our Simple Machines unit for the Grade 2s and our Materials and Structures unit for the Grade 1s, we are building structures with Ms Innocente in the library. This week, we did some rapid prototyping to create a container that would hold 10 wooden beads using only straws, popsicle sticks and tape. The students were very creative in their designs. The next challenge for our students will be to make structures with moving parts.
We will continue to discuss food allergies for Grade 1 and prescription/non-prescription medicines for Grade 2. We will learn how to recognize an allergic reaction and what to do and how to read prescription labels and identify rules of the proper use of all medicines.
In term 2, we will focus on Human Development and Sexual Health. Click here to view the Ontario Health Curriculum.
The students are learning to create optical illusion art with shapes, lines and colours using pattern blocks, rulers and markers.
