Mrs Reyes' Newsletter February 2017

Dear Parents,

February is shaping out to be a very busy month for everyone with many events happening at school. Please read on to find out what's happening at Norman Ingram.

Choir Members

Choir resumes for the month of February. Practices will be held on Tuesdays during the lunch hour.

Valentine's Day Bonanza - Tuesday, February 14th

The Grade 5s are putting on a Valentine's Day Bonanza on Valentine's Day. They will be selling all kinds of treats for the school to buy. The money earned goes to help fund the Grade 5 Graduation Trip. Prices range from $1-$5. If you would like for your child to purchase something at the Bonanza, they will have some time to browse the Bonanza in the Gym before morning recess.

Valentine's Day/ Red & White Day - Tuesday, February 14th

Students are welcomed to wear Red & White to celebrate Valentine's Day. Our class will celebrate Valentine's Day with some treats of our own. If you'd like to bring in something, please be conscious of nut allergies.

Writing and making Valentine's Day cards make for a great activity to explore your child's creativity and to practice their printing. If you'd like to hand out cards, please be sure there is one for every child in the class. We have 20 students. Click here for a class list.

Parent Teacher Interviews - Thursday, February 16th (PM)/Friday, February 17th (AM)

For this round of interviews, I will only see parents that I need to see. If I do not request an interview, I do not need to see you to discuss your child's progress. However, if you still would like to meet, please bring forward any concerns you might have regarding your child at your scheduled interview time.

Sign Up Genius will be available for you to sign up on Monday, February 6th. However, Report Cards do not go home until the following Monday, February 13th.

Show and Tell

The students have been working hard to finish their narrative stories. They look great. We can't wait to share them with you soon!

We have discussed and explored the features of non-fictional text e.g. table of contents, glossary, index and keywords. The students will wrap up their Report Writing Projects on the topic of their choice in a few weeks. They have learned to use programs such as EPIC, PebbleGo and Kiddle to research their topics.

We will move on to Poetry; learning about the different types of poetry such as Cinquain, Haiku and Diamante.

We have been learning about Measurement using standard (e.g. centimetres and metres) and non-standard (e.g. snap cubes and paper clips) units of measurement. We have described and compared different lengths, widths and heights. We will then focus on Mass, Capacity, Area and Perimeter for the Grade 2s.

We are moving on to 3D shapes in the coming weeks; using math words such as faces, vertices and edges to describe and sort 3D shapes.

Science/Social Studies

The students have an on-going project with Ms Innocente, constructing playground structures; integrating Movement (Grade 2) and Communities.

We will be investigating Liquids and Solids with the Grade 2s by looking at the different ways in which liquids and solids interact and the various uses of liquid and solid materials.

The Grade 1s will be focusing on the Energy in Our Lives by investigating energy sources, how we use it and ways we can conserve it.

The arts

The students will explore a variety of art forms, styles and techniques from the past and present by exploring the works of Wayne Thiebaud and Claude Monet. In Drama, we will use the creative process to communicate ideas and feelings of dramatic performances.
