Marin Headlands mill valley, ca

Access to various trails and one of the few dog friendly beaches just north of San Francisco and right after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.

I always thought Marin would have a lot of dog-friendly trails but because a lot of land is protected wildlife there actually aren't that many options. And this isn't one of those instances where "no dogs" mean you can actually bring dogs - people are pretty strict about the rules.

If you're looking for a short (under 5 miles) loop then try this trail: Miwok trail to Wolf Ridge to Coastal trail. Aside from being one of the best marked trails (you can't get lost here) what's great about this trail is:

It has elevation which is not only a great workout for humans and pups alike, but also means you get great views of the rolling hills AND ocean!

There are even stairs!

The trail is a mix of hard packed dirt, rocks and pavement.

If you go in the spring you can see all kinds of wildflowers

You can end the hike at Rodeo Beach, which is completely dog friendly!

And sometimes you can even see whales and dolphins!

We've been here a couple times, each one a different season and there's one thing mom really doesn't like: no matter when we've gone, I always come back covered in ticks!

If you're like me, you don't like staying on the path and jump in and out of all the bushes, then you're going to get ticks, so make sure your fur parents do a very thorough check after!

I think something flew in my mouth!

Your fur parents want to know:

  • Yes, there is parking (parking lots)
  • Yes, this is an off-leash park
  • No, this is not a fenced enclosure
  • No, there are no doggy (or human) water fountains
  • No, there are no poop bags
  • Yes, there are trash bins (by Rodeo Beach)
  • Yes, there are benches (by Rodeo Beach)
  • Yes, there are toilets (by Rodeo Beach)
