TRANSFER STRONG Summer 2021

Dear Colleagues,

We always want to share news and information with our valued partners, but don’t want to fill your inbox, so welcome to the Wayne State Transfer Student Success Center’s new Transfer Strong newsletter. At the start of each semester we’ll provide this source of Warrior news and transfer updates to keep you well informed.

Everyone likes to be welcomed, and the TSSC is the front door for transfer students and professionals. The TSSC provides resources, recommendations and programming in an inclusive, supportive environment.

Check out the updated TSSC website. While visiting, you’ll notice we launched “Thank a Transfer Champion” to recognize leaders like you who are helping transfer students succeed. As students detail their experiences, we’ll be reaching out to the “champions” to share the stories and add our own special Wayne State thank you.

Wayne State was again named to the PTK Transfer Honor Roll this spring, and awarded an Equity Transfer Initiative grant from the AACC. This only energized us more to improve transfer pathways and continue working with you to develop partnerships and support students. Please contact me or the TSSC so we can discuss new collaborations. I look forward to hearing from you!

Best wishes,

Michael Quattro, Director of Educational Outreach and Transfer Initiatives, Wayne State University

New WSU transfer scholarships support state programs for adult learners and frontline workers

Wayne State University is offering scholarship support to students who complete the state’s new Michigan Reconnect program or Futures for Frontliners program.

Michigan Reconnect will pay the cost of tuition for eligible adults who want to pursue an associate degree or skills certificate at their in-district community college. Students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s at Wayne State after obtaining their associate degree through Michigan Reconnect will be considered for a $4,000 Reconnect Transfer Award: $2,000 per academic year for two consecutive years beginning the term of admission.

Students who complete the state’s Futures for Frontliners program, which provides tuition-free access to community college, may be eligible for Wayne State’s Frontliners Forward scholarship. Students must earn an associate degree at a Michigan community college and enroll in a WSU degree program to earn their first bachelor’s to be considered. This scholarship provides transfer students a $4,000 scholarship: $2,000 per academic year for two consecutive years beginning the term of admission.

Students will be automatically considered for merit-based funding in addition to both new scholarships.

CHEMISTRY

Starting in the Fall 2021 term, the Department of Chemistry will move to a new curriculum that includes a traditional two-semester general chemistry sequence completed prior to organic chemistry. This will put Wayne State in line with the general chemistry and organic chemistry sequence taught at most colleges and universities across the country.

The new general chemistry courses will be offered under the course numbers CHM 1100/1130 (General Chemistry I, lecture and laboratory) and CHM 1140/1150 (General Chemistry II, lecture and laboratory). Chemistry and biochemistry majors will continue to complete analytical chemistry as part of their degree requirements, but will benefit from being able to enroll in a smaller course specific to majors. This course will start in the Winter 2022 term and will be listed as CHM 3120/3130.

Questions about chemistry transfer credits and the new general chemistry curriculum should be directed to Erin Bachert at erin@wayne.edu. For more information about the Department of Chemistry, visit chem.wayne.edu.

BIOLOGY

Effective in the Fall 2021 term, BIO 2200 (Introductory Microbiology) will no longer be offered. BIO 2200 equivalent courses will transfer in as BIO 2270/2271 (Principles of Microbiology, separate lecture and lab).

In addition, STA 1020 (Elementary Statistics) equivalents will not satisfy the BS in Biological Sciences statistics course option. Students will need STA 2210 (Probability and Statistics) or the equivalent as the required statistics course option for the BS in Biological Sciences degree. STA 1020 equivalents will still be used for the BA in Biological Sciences degree requirement.

Phi Theta Kappa recognizes Wayne State for exemplary transfer pathways

Wayne State University is one of only 150 colleges and universities in the nation - and one of only two public universities in Michigan - recognized by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for the dynamic pathways it has created to support transfer students and help them succeed.

The PTK Transfer Honor Roll recognizes four-year colleges and universities that have developed transfer pathways that lead to excellence and success among community college transfer students.

Transfer Student Ambassador Kaleigh Webber, who works in the TSSC, transferred to WSU from Schoolcraft College. “I always tell students who are transferring from a Michigan community college to complete the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA),” she says. “In my opinion, it is such an amazing thing offered to community college students. The MTA allows students to complete (university) general education courses at participating community colleges. Earning my MTA allowed me to jump right into my major courses when I started at WSU.”

Transfer student Dillon McInerney leads Warrior baseball team

Athletic standout and transfer student Dillon McInerney of Richmond was named to the All-GLIAC First Team this season for his skills on the mound.

McInerney, the starting pitcher for the Warriors, began his career at St. Clair Community College and is now pursing an MBA in the Mike Ilitch School of Business.

McInerney started nine games and went 5-3 with a 2.08 ERA. He struck out 42 batters over 60 and 2/3 innings and collected two complete games. The team captain was named GLIAC Pitcher of the Week on two occasions this spring. He tossed a nine-inning complete game victory at Purdue Northwest, allowing two runs and striking out six. Another top performance came at Saginaw Valley State, where he did not allow an earned run in seven innings with five strikeouts.

“Thank a Transfer Champion” program makes it easy for students to thank mentors for help

Transferring schools is an exciting process, but one that usually requires help along the way. Transfer students looking to say thanks to someone who helped them during their transfer journey can now do so through the Transfer Student Success Center’s Thank a Transfer Champion initiative.

“The program allows students to share their personal transfer stories while acknowledging those who ‘championed’ them along the way,” says TSSC Manager Ranae Hamama. “The program will also allow us the opportunity to reach out to the transfer champion so we can thank them for helping and supporting students. We always want to connect with people with similar dedication to transfer student success.”

“The main benefit to this program is that it provides students with a platform to be able to share expressions of gratitude toward individuals that have had a positive impact on their educational journey,” says Hamama. “Stories are how we connect, and these stories allow us the opportunity to spotlight, if permitted, their transfer journey. While each story is unique, it can be powerful when shared with others. It helps students to see others, like them, following similar paths.”

Transfer Spotlight: Kevin Papuga II

Kevin Andrew Papuga II, a 30-year-old, first-generation college graduate, was selected 2021 commencement speaker for the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, from which he received a bachelor’s degree in public relations with a minor in communication studies.

Papuga made his way to Wayne State University as a transfer student via Jackson College's Prison Education Initiative program, where he became a student ambassador and writing tutor, obtained a 4.0 throughout his course of study, completed his associate degree in general studies and qualified for academic scholarships — all while finishing his 70-month stay in the Michigan Department of Corrections.

He offers his continual support and unique perspective to transfer students through the Transfer Student Success Center, where he is a transfer student ambassador. He helped create and facilitate both weekly and holiday events for transfer students (in-person and virtual), and offers advice to prospective students to help them better navigate the transfer process. He is a regular contributor to student panels and openly shares his personal transfer story.
