UPWARD for children and families MAY 2019 NEWSLETTER

Bringing hope and joy to the children we serve

“Pirates” was theme of UPWARD's End of the Year Event

Captain Jack Sparrow was on hand this year for UPWARD’s Pirate themed End of the Year Event! He entertained the children and their families with story telling as well as showing them how to defend themselves in a sword fight! He made sure to remind them that they should try to never engage in fighting, but if they must, they needed to know how to defend themselves!

We topped the day off with a graduation for one of our high school students and three preschoolers!

Thunderbirds Charities invests 250k in UPWARD programs and facilities

George Thimsen, one of The Thunderbirds, was on campus Tuesday, February 26th to be a part of a video being put together by Waste Management and Thunderbirds Charities regarding how they have supported UPWARD over the years. Mr. Thimsen toured UPWARD and talked with Ryan Anderson, the dad of Ellie, one of our children who receives services in our child care, special needs preschool and outpatient therapy programs. You can watch the video on YouTube, “Thunderbirds Charities Spotlight”.

Thunderbirds Charities have invested $250,000 in both capital improvements and program services.

Board of Visitors Supports UPWARD’S Nursing Program

We are pleased to announce the Board of Visitors recently awarded a $20,000 Grant to UPWARD for Children and Families. As one of the oldest non-profit organizations in Arizona serving children with special needs, UPWARD is grateful for the support of the Board of Visitors.

CEO Doug Carter said “This grant will help UPWARD meet the medical needs of children who are medically fragile and severely disabled. This is the second consecutive year the Board of Visitors has supported the Nursing Program at UPWARD.”

Campus Projects Completed

Phase One of the therapy clinic renovation was completed the first week of April. In addition, we now have 52 covered parking spots for parents, visitors and staff (just in time for the 100+ degree temperatures!). A special thanks to the Steele Foundation for funding covered parking and the Kieckefer Foundation for funding the therapy clinic renovations.

Child Care Enrollment More Than Doubles

UPWARD’s child care program enrollment has more than doubled in the past year. Prior to our new campus completion in 2016, we had an enrollment of 20 children in our child care program. We currently have capacity for 52 and have an enrollment of 48. We have a waiting list for all four of our child care classrooms. We identified the expansion of quality affordable child care as a critical community need prior to launching the campus expansion project.
