Advanced Graphic Design I will provide students with an opportunity to take the skills they learned in Intro to Graphic Design and apply them to the creation of standard print design projects. In this advanced class students will continue to use Photoshop and InDesign while diving deeper into the basics of Adobe Illustrator. Students will apply the basic skills learned in the intro level course to higher-level thinking and more in depth projects. Students will learn about typography, packaging design, visual identity & branding, book & magazine layout, poster and promotional design, all while continuing to strengthen their skills with the Adobe visual design suite.

​Note: The first term focuses special attention to learning the Adobe Illustrator CC program, while the second term will focus on creating solutions to standard graphic design projects.

Semester Goals:

• Students will be able to demonstrate strong proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
• Students will proficiently apply the elements and principles of design to the creation unique print design projects.
• Students will begin to develop an individual design portfolio.

Classroom Expectations

In the Classroom:

• Be respectful of others. Our classroom is a small community and those around you deserve respect and fair treatment. Be positive, supportive and helpful. Listen to your peers when they speak in class - what they have to say is important! Only ONE person should be talking at a time. Tolerance is key not to mention that disrespect is rude and will not be tolerated. Disruptive behavior, inappropriate language, negativism, and put-downs are not allowed in this room. You can't expect people to work on your team if you treat them poorly.
• When the teacher is talking - all eyes up. Pause what you are working on and focus on what is being shared with you. When the teacher is talking, no one else should be. Your attention is required so you do not miss any important information and your peers can hear the teacher as well.
• School policy will be followed on tardies.

Work Ethic:

• Come in on time and ready to work. You should check the board when you come in to see what is going on in the classroom for that day. You will have 10 minutes at the end of class to clean up.
• Spend the entire class working on projects each day. Students are expected to be engaged in the assigned work. Use your class time wisely. Ask questions, experiment, and push yourself.
• It is highly recommended that you backup all your work to a flash drive or Google Drive. You are responsible for all of your work so if something happens to your file, you will need to make up the missing work.
• No cell phones. Keep them out of sight and out of mind. School policy will be followed regarding students who have their phone out during class.
• No video games. You are in the lab to do your classwork. There is always something to do for our class and playing video games is not an acceptable use of your time.
• When absent, check Google Classroom and/or our class syllabus for the current assignment.
• Plagiarism - Misrepresenting others’ work as your own is intellectual dishonesty. Because research and learning are often best done in groups, collaboration with classmates on many of our assignments is expected. However, all work must be individual and research or any written work must be written in your own words. You will receive a zero for any project or class work that is plagiarized.

Classroom Equipment:

• Absolutely no food or drink in studio or near the computers. Drinks are allowed if in a sealed, screw top container. We have a lot of expensive equipment in the room and food and drink spills can damage the equipment. If you have any trash at your station, throw it away before you leave. Food is non negotiable. A lot of students use the lab equipment and I don't want to risk any allergens being on shared surfaces. Additionally, food is a quick way to ruin equipment.
• This is not your personal space or your room. Don't leave your stuff laying around. If you take it out, put it away again.
• Login to the iMac with your period number. For example, for Period 2 your login is period2. There is no password.
• Please use the classroom iMacs responsibly. If you break them, we no longer have them to use. Be sure when you arrive and when you leave there is a keyboard and mouse at your station.
• Don't change wiring set-ups, cable configurations, equipment set-ups, or backgrounds unless you ask me first. Again, this is not your personal space.
• Do not move any of the lab equipment without instructor permission.
• Do not open or alter student files; move or use student documents.
