The Positivity Project for Families

  • Next week is the final week in the 2020-21 P2 Calendar. And, we'll be focusing on the Other People Mindset. This mindset consists of the five elements intended to help people understand ways to build positive relationships in their own lives: identifying and appreciating the good in others, knowing my words and actions affect others, supporting others when they struggle, cheering others’ successes, and being present and giving others my attention.
  • This week’s example is Dr. Chris Peterson. Dr. Peterson was a Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan and Co-Director of the Michigan Positive Psychology Center. In 2010, he was awarded the university’s Golden Apple Award, given annually to one professor who “treats each lecture as if it were his last.” Chris was one of the founders and leading figures in positive psychology – and was among the 100 most widely cited psychologists in the world. He served as research director of the Values in Action (VIA) project, which described, classified, and measured character strengths. His VIA Survey of Signature Strengths has been taken by more than a million people throughout the globe.
  • As Chris wrote in 2008, he would often begin lectures by stating, “I can sum up positive psychology in just three words – other people matter. Period. Anything that builds relationships between and among people is going to make you happy.” Chris passed away suddenly in October 2012 and we are proud to carry on his legacy through the research on character and relationships that he led for over a decade.
  • So, why does this matter? Because research shows that relationships are a key predicator of health, happiness, and resilience. As the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child (NSCDC) at Harvard University found, “Resilience requires relationships, not rugged individualism.” That’s because, when researching why some children do well and show resilience despite exposure to stressful circumstances and hardship, the NSCDC observed: “The single most common finding is that children who end up doing well have had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive parent, caregiver, or other adult.”
