Medium of the Art/ Technique of the Artist

This sculpture of of the 'White Closed-Form Vessel' by Toshiko Takaezu from the 1990's was my most favored piece. Upon seeing the creation, I was quite confused on its importance. However, after reading about significance and aligning it with my own life, I came to understand it. Takaezu's explanation of her vessel signifies it as a different styled diary, which really sparked my attention. I myself have a diary, and it is very dear to my heart in college, because I don't have anyone to run to here when I am stressed. Therefore, I understand her privacy of creating something sacred to hold all of her secrets. It created a sense of comfort and understanding correlating between me and Takaezu.

Design of the Museum

My most favored part of the museum was the section dedicated to women artist's. I found this wing of the Harn Museum to be very diverse, controversial, and calm as well. Although this artist were able to display topics of much significance, it felt very at home to me. Women are very witty yet graceful at the same time. The Guerrilla girls showed strength in women, while the rest of the paintings and sculptures and such depicted benevolence. This wing of the museum was very spacious- arranged in a cube like manner, then following into the Guerrilla Girl hall way. Being in the Women's wing made me feel majestic and powerful, by knowing that the unpopular gender has created such powerful pieces.

Art & Core Values

The Guerrilla Girls' 1986 Report Card expresses my value of persistence and never giving up [especially as a woman]. By showing how these women were ridiculed, it shows that they all nonetheless persisted and fought hard and tough to be recognized! Giving up is not an option for me while here at the University of Florida, or in life period as a black woman. I have so much talent, strength, and virtue to give back to the world. If I was to give that all up, I would be a waste of space on Earth.

Art & the Good Life

This 2008 Vessel by OGAWA Machiko shows what the good life is to me. The world is this very judgmental, cruel, scary, and difficult place to succeed in: this is the outer shell of the sculpture (beige and rocky). However, by centering yourself in the world and not worrying about the negatives of it, you will end up with a life that is beautifully created (the crystal inside). You must defeat the mountains and hills to find yourself in a state of peace in the midst of destruction. This Vessel shows the theme of embodying the good life! It is simply thriving on its own without outside forces corrupting its central area of contentedness. I am not yet appreciative of embodying the good life, because I have not yet found what it is to me. However, I do have a great guide (the Vessel) in showing me that once I have found my piece, to not let outside destruction strip away my sense of restfulness.
