"She was like a mother to me." As the last remaining family member in the area, Elpers said she has taken it upon herself to visit at least twice a year to take care of the grave. "Grandma always loved the flowers. Her yard was full of flowers - everywhere. So I always try and get something bright and pretty for her," she said.

After the confrontation she replied in English to the man, who was surprised to hear her speak without an accent, she said. "I think a lot of people have these stories of being told to 'go back to where you came from,'" said Muaddi Darraj. "It's a very clear way of telling you, for some reason, either because of the way you speak or the way you look, that you somehow don't belong."
