Rita was born on August 28, 1952 in Akron, Ohio. She is the daughter of Ray and Elvira.Rita has loved poetry and music ever since she was little. Rita fell in love with learning and literature in a household that encouraged education. Rita was invited to the white house as a presidential scholar, she was ranked among the top 100 high school students in the nation. Soon after she furthered her education and went on to study in Germany on a fulbright scholarship. She then met and married Fred Viebahn a German born novelist and they went on to have a kid. When Rita came back she taught creative writing at Arizona State University for three years.
Type of poetry
Rita's poetry is known for it's lyricism, beauty, and sense of history. She carefully crafts her work to include her musical background and her history. Her poems have rhythm and movement within them. The way she writes her poems they are structured in a way that makes it flow all together. She makes comparisons throughout her poems that relate to her life like dancing and poetry and that is where she makes a connection between the two and that just makes the poem unique.
As Rita started writing in poetry in college she lacked self confidence as a writer, Her family and professors encouraged her to keep writing and to not give up because they saw her talent. After she graduated she began to publishing her short stories, poems, chapbooks, etc. Rita is influenced by her musical background that's how she makes her poems flow. Rita reflects on her past, she focuses on those who have been oppressed especially African Americans and events such as civil rights movement and then adds her own views and puts it into her poems.
