During the fall, the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Team participated in three competitions in which students engaged in the dispute resolution processes of negotiation, arbitration, and mediation.
In October, the team made up of Matthew Sarna (3L), Meagan George (2L), and Alex Chiang (2L), participated in the FINRA (financial industry regulatory authority) ADR triathlon. The triathlon tests students in the three discrete dispute resolution processes of negotiation, mediation, and arbitration in the complex areas of securities law and FINRA regulations. The team performed exceptionally, obtaining significant settlement results for its client (a national brokerage firm) in both the negotiation and mediation rounds and placing 2nd in mediation out of 18 schools. In only the second year of competing, the team was in the running for overall competition champions. The team was coached by recent graduate and former ADR Team member Sue DuMont and assisted with arbitration preparation by Dana Sirkis Gloor and a team of 4 arbitrators from Miles and Stockbridge.
At the International ADR Invitational Mediation Tournament at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell the 2L team of Collin Wojchiechowski, Andy Sylvia, and Eli Sherlock represented Maryland Carey Law. The team participated in three rounds of competition where the students alternately serve in the role of attorney, client, and mediator. The team placed 1st in attorney-client team and Collin Wojchiechowski and Andy Sylvia were awarded 3rd and 10th individual mediator respectively. The students were coached by recent graduate and former ADR Team member and Mediation Clinic student Molly Boyd '16 and team advisor Toby Guerin.
Over the weekend of November 12-13, Maryland Carey Law hosted 24 teams from 11 different law schools. The 3L team of Sydney Fortmann and Charles Hilberg finished in 2nd place and will likely receive an invitation to compete in the National Negotiation Competition in Chicago in February. The 2L team of Anthony Berlenbach and Feza Kikaya and Rob Berman and Carli Lubin both performed well ending the competition among the top half of competitors. The students were coached by adjunct faculty member Barry Gogel.
