Mr. Hubler Weekly Update 09/23/16

Hello Eagles!

This week was filled with lots of progress and learning! I am very proud of the effort that I saw from all students this week. This is the type of work ethic that pays off in ways we can't always see right away. This week I saw more students raising their hands to participate in class discussions, students doing their best to improve on their performance on assignments from before, and students challenging themselves to get outside of their comfort zones. So far, this is turning out to be my best group of students ever!

Here are my classroom expectations.

Based on what I've seen from students this week I am really excited to see where we will end up by the end of the year. I anticipate lots of goal-smashing and successes in the future!

MATH

This week we continued our review of previously learned skills with Multiplication and Fractions. We learned about the traditional algorithms and expanded form for multiplication as well as the line method, which challenged a lot of us, even some of the other math teachers who had never seen it before. On Friday, we finished off the week by reviewing what a fraction is and how to write them.

Coming up next week, we will be continuing to work with fractions and focusing on using a coordinate grid.

Learning Strategies

This was a big week for Learning Strategies! We checked our grades and calculated our GPAs on Monday to determine which class would hold the GPA trophy for the week (and a piece of candy!). This week Ms. Dudley's class eked out a victory, but we worked hard this week to try to improve our grades and win it next week. We also completed our first current events discussion where we discussed the pros and cons of fracking. I was really impressed with the level of maturity and respect that students demonstrated during our debate. On Thursday, we took our first leap into the Seeing My Time workbook and students rated themselves in skills related to being a student.

Next week we will check grades again to win back the trophy! We will also be watching a small portion of the first presidential debate in class and students will discuss their thoughts and opinions of the candidates. We will continue to work through the Seeing My Time workbook and working on our executive functioning skills.

This boggled the minds of even the other math teachers!

Coming Up!

In October we will begin having our first graded tests in math and graded projects in Learning Strategies.
