Below is a video of a Cumbia dance I co-choreographed and performed in as a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis in 2016. I chose Cumbia because it originated in Colombia, where my entire family is from and a place vital to my identity. The dance is divided into 3 songs and Cumbia styles which represent the history of the dance itself. The first part reflects the original dance style which developed on the Colombian coast. The second part reflects Mexican influences on both the movements and songs of Cumbia. Finally, the last part of the dance represents Cumbia as it is seen today, as a dance shaped and and globalized by the children and grandchildren of the people who created it.
