College Readiness Student Showcase

We are often asked, “what does it mean to be College Ready?” According to ACT defined Readiness Standards, when students attain readiness benchmarks, they have at least a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in first-year Math, Science, English, and Reading related college courses. In other words, students attaining college readiness benchmarks have a greater chance of success (as a college freshman) than those that do not.
Parents are often dismayed when their student's ACT scores don't reflect their GPA. Despite their best efforts, they can't seem to attain readiness benchmarks. We hear it all too often, "I don't understand; he or she has a 4.00 GPA and does very well in school. What's going on?"

Well, a myriad of things can be at play, but there is hope! Let us take you on a journey of a graduating senior we recently helped achieve college readiness and TOPs qualification.

Student's Story
Initial Scores
Student ranked 38% among recent graduates/seniors in the US and 47% in Louisiana

... a graduating senior, began our program with an 18 ACT Composite Score; he had not yet achieved the minimum ACT score required to receive TOPS (Louisiana Taylor Opportunity Program for Students) Funding.

Although he had not decided if he would attend a Louisiana college or university, our immediate goal was to get him to a TOPS ACT qualifying score. Once achieved, we would work on getting him as close to his goal score as possible.

Although standardized tests don’t solely reflect a student’s abilities, they are valuable tools for identifying and remediating achievement gaps – if used strategically.
Student ranked 38% among recent graduates/seniors in the US and 47% in Louisiana.

Next, we wanted to ensure that he was college-ready; we vigorously worked to remediate deficiencies observed in assessments we administered. When starting our program, he had not attained ACT College Readiness Benchmarks in 3 of the 4 subjects assessed: specifically, Math, Science, and Reading.

The Industry average, after completing an ACT Prep program, is two (2.3) points.

...after completing our program, student increased his ACT composite score 4 points – scoring a 22 on his October 2019 ACT Test. In achieving this score, he surpassed Louisiana’s TOPS minimum ACT Score requirement!

Student's score increases were phenomenal!
He now ranks 64th in the US and 76th in the State, after previously ranking 38th in the US and 47th in Louisiana!

He increased four (4) points in Math (16 to a 20) five (5) points in Science (18 to a 23), and six (6) points in Reading (17 to a 23).

Student is now positioned for first-year college success, and we are extremely happy for him. He came to us ready to work, and he did all we asked of him. He is a testament to what’s possible when “the village” is at work!

"...an improved Louisiana begins with an academically prepared student."
