East Texas became the home of the Kickapoo people when they were displaced from Wisconsin and Illinois. The Kickapoo language belongs to the Algonquian family. According to Ethnologue, this language is considered threatened: "The language is used for face-to-face communication within all generations, but it is losing users." (Ethnologue)
