Living A Life…A Puzzlement Ellen Chisdes Neuberg

After owning and operating Gallerie Chiz in Shadyside for 22 years, and now painting six days a week in her gallery-turned-studio, Ellen Chisdes Neuberg presents a new series of abstract-surrealist paintings as she ponders the intricacies of life in transition.

Prior to her life as a gallery owner, Ellen studied musical theater, speech and art therapy, and worked for much her life in these fields. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Chatham College (now Chatham University) in 1991 at age 52. Ellen started painting and selling her artwork in 1970 and hasn't stopped since. She is a member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Society of Artists, and Group A.

“While trying to conjure up a title for this show, the word puzzlement came to mind. It is the title of a spoken song from the musical, The King and I, originally performed on Broadway, with both utter confusion and humor, by Yul Brynner, playing the role of the King of Siam.*

A Clean Slate, 2019, Acrylic on canvas, 48 x 48 inches.

The paintings that I have created for this exhibition, Living A Life…A Puzzlement, deal with the ways our lives and our world seem to be in constant and sometimes complex states of change. However, my daily art process is simple. I start to paint, and the painting grows, each addition determining its direction. I use color and shapes, some recognizable and some not, that I encourage to live together in the boundaries provided by the canvas, and the paintings take on personalities of their own. The use of transparent layering allows a visual penetration of what might appear behind the scenes, behind the seemingly happy and colorful facades, perhaps revealing what may be hidden underneath, possibly as an analogy to human lives…exposing deeper truths for the viewers’ interpretations.

I hope you enjoy exploring these paintings, puzzlements, as much as I have enjoyed creating them. Studio visitors are always welcome!” -Ellen Chisdes Neuberg, 2020
