West Hill Primary School weekly Newsletter 15th july 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a strange academic year 2019/2020 has been. It seems unbelievable to be writing our last newsletter of the year after such a disrupted period for everyone in our community.

We have been so proud of how all the children, families and staff at West Hill school have adapted to the constraints and changes that have occurred over the last few months. It has not always been easy but we feel that our community has shown true resilience and developed new skills in coping with the changes and restrictions.

Our teachers and children have had to develop creative imaginative ways of communicating, staying in touch and learning. This has been no easy task and it is due in no small part to the great efforts of the staff here at West Hill but also the support of the families at home. Education is a partnership between home and school and these last few weeks and months have proved that.

Thank you to all the teachers and the team of staff at West Hill for their creativity and hard work this year. It is important to reflect back on all the amazing learning and experiences that took place in the Autumn and Spring Terms. We all enjoyed our International Celebration day, World Book Day, The whole-school Spanish themed Art Exhibition and many more events to celebrate our learning. The children made such great progress in the first two terms of the year and this is to be celebrated. Unfortunately the academic year was cut short and Home Learning became the normal. It was incredible to witness parents and families supporting their children to continue their learning journeys and develop many other skills too.

We are so excited to be welcoming back our whole school community in September. All year groups will be open and all children are expected to attend school. Please see the school website and the letter below for more specific information about the new term in September.

The first day of the Autumn Term is Friday 4th September. This will be a great transition day where children will meet their new teachers and familiarise themselves with the new routines.

Have a safe and fun summer holiday

Mrs Healy and Mrs Carmen

Remember school finishes on Friday 17th July at 3.15pm. It is NOT a MUFTI day.

As you can see from the photos, children in Years 2,3,4 & 5 were absolutely delighted to receive their Reading for Pleasure packs from Learn 2 Love 2 Read over the last few days. We hope every child whether at home or school has the opportunity to enjoy these books over the summer and to use them to complete this year's Summer Reading Challenge! A massive thank you again to charity Learn 2 Love 2 Read who have been so supportive of all the children at West Hill. If you would like to find out more about them please click on the button below. The amazing charity Learn 2 Love 2 Read are also offering support specifically aimed at children at the early stages of phonics learning - ideal for those in Reception and perhaps for less confident readers in Year 1. They will be producing mini clips, maximum 2 minutes long, focusing on practising individual sounds, as well as some simple sounding out and blending practice. It is simple to sign up. As it is now the end of term, please register directly with Teresa at Learn 2 Love 2 Read using the email address above.
In the final week of term we were very impressed by the last home learning photos. Chayce in Year 4 and Kartez in Year 2 have been busy at home with all sorts of work including building a castle and fact files on owls and gorillas. Elise In Year 3 has made incredible sea animals using recycled materials.
In another busy week at school Reception have been investigating what happens when water freezes, Year 1 have created some beautiful pictures of the Eiffel Tower, Year 4 have been painting in the style of Jackson Pollock, using story cubes to inspire their creative writing and going on a bug hunt in the playground whilst Year 5 have celebrated Bastille Day with croissants and jam and learning why the day is important. Mrs Caraccio and Mrs Carmen also held an all school quiz using Zoom! Categories included guessing the object and how many languages a class can say hello in amongst many others.
