Mountain View News Term 3 Week 8

Principal's Message

R U OK? This was a question specifically asked in our school community and around the country this week. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and support those around us.

How we deal with the challenges and celebrations of life makes a difference between surviving and thriving and I believe that the shared values that we have between school and home supports the sense of belong and connection for our students.

Developing resilient young people is a core focus of our wellbeing program at Mountain View and I encourage you to ask your child, “Are you OK?” and “What did you learn?” on a regular basis. Take care and my prayer is that you are OK.

Mrs Julia Heise

R U OK? Day is a national day dedicated to the recognition of raising awareness for mental health and in particular suicide. This year, 2020 is not the year that we envisioned and as a result we have seen an increase in people struggling with mental health. A simple question of R U OK? can mean so much. It's also about the conversations we are having after we ask the question.

Mountain View students and staff wore yellow, enjoyed music, bubbles, lollipops and a special yellow check in bench as we realised the impact we have when we ask each other R U OK? Prep - Year 6 students had targeted activities about finding a check in partner. Year 7-12 were challenged to think about what to say after you ask R U OK?

We encourage you to continue to check in with your kids and with each other and ask the important question R U OK?

Year 3 Fitness

Our Year 3 Class have been learning the importance of physical exercise. The Year 3 students created and then participated in their own boot camp.

Chemically Balanced

Year 8 has been studying Chemical Science this term. Getting to mix chemicals and use the bunsen burners has been the highlight of their study.

New Coop for Chicks

Year 7 Agriculture has been part of a momentous event: the chickens have moved to their new coop. The students cleaned out the old coop, got the new coop ready for the new residents, moved the garden beds, planted the spring vegetables, moved the compost and visited with their feathered friends. Physical labour is always a joy for students. Thank you to Mr Martinez, Mr Grima and some Year 11 students who built the new home and also Year 7 for moving our chickens to their new home.

Film Enthusiasts

Invictus is the well-being program at Mountain View and Year 8 has been studying the mastery of new skills as a way to experience failure, perseverance and success to encourage students to face and tackle the challenges of life. Students were asked to film themselves over a period of time learning and mastering a new skill. The films were shown at the annual Invictus Film Festival this week and winning students received gift cards to Hoyts Cinema. Students voted on the best films and we are happy to announce the following winners:

• Equal 3rd - Jordyn (baking sourdough) and Dhruv (bike riding trick)
