The greenhouse effect By: genevieve shadron

How does this event occur? Green house gases act like a blanket around the earth, trapping in energy and causing it to warm up. The greenhouse effect is natural and necessary to support life on earth, but when greenhouse gases buildup too much it can result in highly dangerous effects on human health and earths ecosystems.
How to avoid this event? The majority of greenhouse gases come from burning fossil fuels to produce energy. Deforestation, industrial processes and agricultural processes also emit gases into the atmosphere. These human activities have released large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
The choices the human society makes today will impact the amount of greenhouse gases we put in the atmosphere in the near future and for years to come. Ways we can prevent the green house effect from getting worse are, to hold back from using so many fossil fuels, conserve energy by turning off lights or taking short showers, recycling, and many more.
Historical information on this event: The most heating up of the earth's atmosphere happened this past November when the earths atmospheric temperature rose 1.8°F.
In addition, the 10 worst greenhouse gases are: 1)water vapor 2)carbon dioxide 3)methane 4)nitrous oxide 5)ozone 6)fluoroform or trifluoromethane 7)hexafluoroethane 8)sulfur hexafluoride 9)trichlorofluoromethane 10)perfluorotributylamine or sulfuryl fluoride. Although most of these words you may not be able to pronounce, you should know that these gases can be helpful and harmful and you should be aware that they exist.
Smog is the pollution of air in a concentrated area.
In the USA, Los Angeles is effected the worst by smog which I said above is air pollution. The air is so badly polluted that you can never see a sunrise in the morning. The reason all this polluted air never escapes LA is because there is a mountain range on the east side of LA so when the wind tries to blow the air away it can never escape over the mountains.
Universally though, China has the most polluted air out of any other country. At one point the smog became so bad their government had to develop codes and systems to protect the people of China from the smog. Most people still wear masks that cover their mouths and noses because the air quality has not improved.
Monitoring of this event: Scientists use air samples, satellite images, airplanes and ships to predict and monitor the progress of the greenhouse effect. Some signs that the greenhouse effect is present are melting ice caps and glaciers and rising atmospheric temperature.
