2018 Sewanee Field Hockey Mid-Season Update

We can't believe we're already halfway through our season here on the mountain! It seems like we just finished preseason, and now we're looking towards conference games starting next week. It's gone by fast, but it's been great thus far!

Pre-season was warm this year, but very productive! We had an awesome start with 12 returners and 8 newcomers joining the program. Our 20 tigers continue to work their butts off on the field and in the weight room every day.

We're currently on a 6-game win streak heading into this weekend's non-conference match-up with DePauw. This will be one of our toughest games yet, and I can't wait to see how it goes. We lost our first game of the season, 5-4, after coming back to tie it up from being down 3-0. I'm very proud of us a unit; our last few games have been the best team hockey we've played since I've been at Sewanee. I'm ecstatic because our team has really connected on and off the field, and it's definitely showing. We are working with each other and for each other.

First goal of the season!

We've had a fun-filled season thus far with a huge trip to the Boston area, where we came home with two wins! Flights always make a road trip that much more interesting and fun for all. I also have to brag, as we had more friends, family and fans in the stands (for both games) than the home teams! Our families from the north were more than happy to have their girls close to home. While in Bean Town, the team had some fun, too! A Duck Tour and evening out were the prizes for two well played games!

Boston or Bust!

This bunch has been a barrel of laughs so far, and I'm sure more are coming soon! Their enthusiasm and heart have been astounding and we're super proud of how far we've come in a short time.

We're excited to announce that not only have we started off with 8 new players, we ALSO have a new coach! You can check out all of our young women by using the "Roster" button below.

Tori Shaffer has joined Michele and Mac on our 2018 coaching staff for both Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse. She comes to us from St. Lawrence in NY and is eager and ready to take on a coaching role. She's already been a huge help and we're so grateful to have another pair of eyes and hands to help!

Individually, we've had some great accolades thus far, and are hopeful that we keep pushing the boundaries with some of them. Junior forward Ceara Caffrey (Scituate, MA) has been climbing up the NCAA standings and is currently tied for first in Goals Per Game and Points Per Game. She's also on pace to break the record for the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) for goals in a single season. She's been named SAA Offensive Player of the Week twice this season and has been recognized by the NFHCA as an honorable mention offensive player of the week as well. Everyday she works harder to reach her goals and makes the rest of the team work that much harder too. They simply don't give up, and I wouldn't have it any other way as a coach.

Abbie Wrather '21 has also been named SAA Defensive Player of the Week after a fantastic weekend holding down our defensive end. She racked up a defensive save against Becker College that really won us the game! Milly Etheridge '22 was also noted by the NCAA a few weeks ago as she was tied for 3rd in NCAA for goals per game and points per game. We're all looking forward hopefully to more accolades for more of our ladies as the season continues.

Family Weekend was a great way to spend some much needed time with our friends and family from near and far. This year we welcomed a lot of families from all over the place and enjoyed a family dinner courtesy of our parents in the Otey Parish Hall on campus.

We also were able to celebrate some of the academic accomplishments of our ladies. Gowning took place on Friday of Family Weekend. We are proud to have had several of our young women gowned and even welcomed back some FH alumni to help in the ceremony.
