Cumbria Coastal Way Seascale to St Bees - 10 miles

We started by taking the short train journey from St Bees to Seascale

Once at Seascale, we headed down to the beach, ready to walk back up to St Bees.

With the Spring weather came plenty of flowers to photograph along the way!

We soon arrived at Sellafield where the route had unfortunately been diverted away from the beach to go right past the nuclear reprocessing site!

After a long detour through farmland, we eventually made our way back to the beach.

Looking back the way we had come, we could see the whole Sellafield site with the Lakeland fells just visible behind.

Just a little further up the beach, we came across an amazing sight - beach bungalows and huts built right on the beach between the railway line and the sea!

Some of the dwellings were in the tradition of beach huts found right around the UK coast, while others were clearly lived in year round - despite the inhospitable winter weather on this North Western coast!

We found more beach bungalows along the coast at Nethertown, situated in a similarly precarious position!

Being close to high tide, the route involved some tricky scrambling over huge boulders and along the bottom of the railway embankment.

Finally, we reached St Bees with its crumbling sandstone cliffs and golf course.
