The Illusion Of Perfection

In today’s world where social media is becoming part of our everyday life, the way we present ourselves is an important factor in relation to the number of followers, likes and comments we receive. However, the media has influenced a specific perfect `idea`appearance and lifestyle that social media users aim to fulfill and with the help of editing apps they can transform themselves to create this look. Therefore, these posts are illusive as they are not showing a true representation of reality and the results of viewing these perfect images has resulted in some social media users having mental health and body image concerns. `The illusion of perfection` series is aimed to help identify this issue. The mask resembles the level of falsification we apply to our appearance, hiding our identity and any imperfections. The specific range of poses represents the current trends we reciprocate in our images online and the contrast between colour and black and white, show the distinction between perfection online and reality.

Exhibition

My idea for exhibiting this project would be in a large white gallery space with lights above the photographs to highlight each image. The choice of white, is to draw the focus away from the surroundings and towards the pictures. To enhance the theme of illusion in my project, I would showcase my images as an installation. Whereby I would separate the black and white image and the Instagram post, to show a clear distinction between Social Media and reality. I would do this by securing the black and white image to the wall using strong double tape, the social media photo would then be attached with thread from the ceiling at a 30cm distance from the wall to show a clear separation.
