Quote:

William Shakespeare was born in the small market town of Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, the third of eight children.

Paraphrase:

He was born in a small town with a lot of siblings

My Ideas:

because of this background, Shakespeare may have lived his early life as an open person. After all with a small town and a sibling on every corner, it must have been hard to keep a secret

"We know that William was born the third of eight children, around April 23, 1564, in Stratford, a market town about one hundred miles north west of London." (Shakespeare)

"William attended grammar school, where he studied Latin grammar, Latin literature, and rhetoric(the uses of language)." (Shakespeare)

Paraphrase:

Shakespeare's work is so famous that even people who have never read his work know lines from things he's written.

My Ideas:

William had many siblings, being the third one born between each of them. They are not positive on his birth date, but they say near April 23rd of the year 1564 William Shakespeare was born. He went to study Latin, and rhetoric.

Quote:

"One can see that Shakespeare absorbed much that was taught in his grammar school, for he had an impressive familiarity with the stories by Latin authors, as is evident when examining his plays and their sources."

(Mabillard)

Paraphrase:

William had a good understanding of what he was taught while in school, and you can see this when you watch and read his works

My Ideas:

His poems are in depth and can be hard to understand so he must have had a pretty good idea of what he was writing and the language he was using.

Quote:

"In any event, when the theaters reopened in 1594, the acting companies were almost decimated financially, but Shakespeare was in a position to buy or otherwise acquire a partnership in one of the newly reorganized companies, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men." (Branam)

"Henceforth, Shakespeare earned money not only from the plays he had written or in which he acted but also from a share of the profits of every company performance. The financial arrangement seemed to inspire his creative efforts, for he set about writing the plays that made him famous,..."(Branam)

Paraphrase:

Shakespeare bought a partnership with a new company called Lord Chamberlain's Men, right after the plague and the theaters were opening again. Shakespeare was earning money from his plays and from the profits of the company performances. This is when he started writing some of his works that are famous today.

My Ideas:

I knew he wrote plays but didn't know he had bought ownership from a new company, and I didn't know the financial arrangement led him to writing his plays. Did he ever act in any of his plays?

Quote:

"When Shakespeare was a teenager, his family fell on hard times. His father stopped attending town council meetings in 1577, and the family’s fortunes began declining." (Branam)

"As was then customary, the young couple probably lived in his parents’ home, which must have seemed increasingly crowded."

(Branam)

Paraphrase:

Hard times arose for the Shakespeare family around the time that William was in his teens. After marrying very early, eighteen, he and his wife most likely went to live with his parents.

My Ideas:

I had no idea that his family went through financial issues and since Shakespeare married early he ended up moving into his parents house. I would like to learn it a little more about this topic.

"Shakespeare's earliest plays were comedies, which entertained audiences while depicting social issues of the day." (Stirling)

"One of his best-known comedies is The Merchant of Venice, which he wrote as a "comicall history," that is, a play with a happy ending." (Stirling)

Paraphrase:

Early in his play writing years he wrote comedies, that also showed issues that were happening in the world. His best know comedy is The Merchant of Venice

My Ideas:

This is a new fact to me. I think it's interesting that Shakespeare depicted social issues and entertained at the same time.

Paraphrase:

Shakespeare was very successful in his lifetime. He wrote over 30 plays, many sonnets, short poems and had two narrative poems that were his two major ones.

My Ideas:

I wonder what his 2 major narrative poems were? Also what inspired him to write sonnets?

His Poems and Plays

Quote:

"Shakespeare’s poems and plays show a love of nature and rural life. This display undoubtedly reflects his childhood experiences and his love of the Stratford countryside." (Lander)

Paraphrase:

His poems and plays are memories from his childhood back in Stratford and his love for the place.

My Ideas:

I would like to learn some more about his childhood experiences and really understand his poems to try and see the connection he was making. I can follow up on this by looking his early life up and then later on his life.

"At the age of eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years older than he was. Sometime after the birth of their second and third child (twins), Shakespeare moved to London, apparently leaving his family in Stratford." (Shakespeare)

"We know that several years later, by 1952, Shakespeare had already become an actor and a playwright." (Shakespeare)

Paraphrase:

William Shakespeare married at a young age and ended up moving to London right after his wife had the twins. In the year 1952, Shakespeare had become the famous poet writer and actor, that we know he was in this modern day.

My Ideas:

I wonder what happened to his family after he just left them and what his kids were into when he returned to be retired? Maybe later on in my research these questions can be answered!!

Quote:

"Even though scholars, basing their argument on a story told more than a century after the fact, accept that Shakespeare was removed from school around age thirteen because of his father's financial and social difficulties, there is no reason whatsoever to believe that he had not acquired a firm grasp of Latin and English at the school and that he had continued his studies despite his removal from the Stratford grammar school."

(Mabillard)

Paraphrase:

He was taken out of school at a young age but still went on to study and had grasped a lot of what he was taught.

My Ideas:

I knew he went to grammar school but did not know he was taken out of school because of the financial issues that his dad was having. How does someone who never finished school become one of the greatest writer in English? Did he have a mentor?
