Hunter Sports High News Term 3 - Week 5 - 2018

What a start we've had to Term 3! We're five weeks in to our new school building now and we're absolutely loving it! Our students have transitioned into their new classrooms and surroundings amazingly well and are enjoying the space, the modern facilities and the technology throughout the playgrounds and classrooms. Staff have reported that students are loving the new flexible classrooms with different seating options and whiteboard tables. Students are engaged and excited about the new school and we are seeing a positive impact on attendance and student behaviour.

Our staff are enjoying the spacious offices and the collaborative environment in the new 'staff house'. Some parents have been lucky enough to see the new school when they came along to the P & C meeting and the subject selection evening earlier this month, however, official opening events will not be held until early in 2019 when the entire project is finalised. Work continues on the construction of the new U Block, landscaping of outdoor learning areas and the demolition of the remaining old buildings. We look forward to welcoming you to the new school over the weeks and months ahead.

As Ms Byrne said to students on the first day in the new school, our students and community thoroughly deserve the amazing new facilities of Hunter Sports High and should make the most of the opportunities available to them as they enjoy their education in one of the most modern schools in the country. With such incredible new classrooms, technology, learning spaces and surroundings, students can look forward to coming to school each and every day.

  • "It's pretty fresh and pretty spacious. The Year 11 & 12 rooms are great."
  • "The amphitheatre is really cool. It's nice and big and is a good space for everybody. I totally love it. I think it's really modern and exciting and I'm actually keen to go to different classes."
  • "First impressions...it's pretty fancy! It looks really good and I can't wait to start learning in it."
  • "I think it's really nice. The colour schemes are a lot different to our old school and it's a lot bigger too!"

Formal assembly celebrates student success

Dane Arber and Samantha Stoops received Silver Commendation Awards at the recent formal assembly.

Our formal assembly was held in the first week of the term and we celebrated the academic achievements of our students during the first half of the school year. Over 230 students received academic awards for placing in the top five per cent of students in each subject. Congratulations to all award winners.

Two students were also presented with Silver Awards at the assembly, recognising their exemplary behaviour and commitment to our school values. Congratulations to Dane Arber (Year 11) and Samantha Stoops (Year 10) on this outstanding achievement. Next step - GOLD!

HSHS Reward System

Hunter Sports High School's reward system is aligned with our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program and is designed to encourage and recognise individual student efforts. Our reward system is used to encourage positive student behaviour that demonstrates the values of respect, responsibility and success. Students are rewarded through the use of Star Awards and a commendation system.

Faculty commendations are awarded to students for:

  • Outstanding student work in class (assignments or examinations)
  • School representation
  • Sport representation or achievement
  • Cultural achievement or participation

Students build up their commendations, which can happen over consecutive years, to achieve the following award levels:

  • 5 Commendations = Bronze Award
  • 3 Bronze Awards = Silver Award
  • 3 Silver Awards = Gold Award

Sports People of the Month

Congratulations to Mitchell Ellison, Erin Cleaver and Phoenix Crossland who were named as our May, June and July Sportspeople of the Month at the formal assembly. They're all now in the running for our Sportsperson of the Year Award at the annual TSP Awards Night in November. Read more about their outstanding sporting achievements in the link below:

Semester 1 Reports & Parent Teacher Interviews

Semester 1 student reports were emailed home to parents at the end of July (Week 1). They are also available on the parent portal (see link below) using your unique username and password. If you need help accessing your child's report, please contact the school office on 4943 5755.

Parent Teacher interviews will be held on Tuesday 11 September from 5pm-8pm at the school. We will notify by email and on our school Facebook page when the online booking system is ready to schedule appointments.

2018 School Photos

School photos were handed out to students during Week 2 and should have found their way home to you by now. Letters also went home to all TSP students regarding the purchase of squad photos. The cut off for ordering TSP photos was Thursday 9th August. All enquiries regarding these photos should be directed to MSP Photography by calling 4966 8292.

on time & in uniform

This term our teachers and deputy principals are paying particular attention to late arrivals and uniform standards. Students who arrive late to school must sign in at the Student Services office and should have a note from a parent or carer explaining why they are late. If there is no note the student will be directed to a deputy principal.

Students are also expected to be in full school uniform each day, taking pride in their school and in themselves. Uniform discrepancies will be noted by every teacher in every class. Second-hand uniform items are available for students to borrow from our Youth Room if needed. If any families are having difficulties meeting uniform requirements, please contact the school office to speak to a deputy principal about student assistance.

Uniform items that are NOT ACCEPTABLE include tights, extremely short shorts and representative sports jerseys/jackets. During the colder months students should wear the black school jacket (available at Lowes Charlestown or online) or alternatively a plain black jumper (with no writing, logos or symbols etc). See our full uniform policy below.

senior EXAMS & speeches

Our Year 12 students put their new senior study spaces to the test very early this term when they sat their Trial HSC exams in the new rooms. The new surroundings see our senior students working hard to complete coursework and revise as they head into the final leg of their secondary schooling. With just five weeks of school to go, students will receive trial exam results soon, providing valuable feedback as they prepare for the HSC exams next term. We wish them well with their studies and encourage them to seek support from their teachers ahead of the exams. Our school counsellors and youth workers are also available if students need additional support during this period.

A reminder too that the Year 12 Presentation Assembly will be held on Thursday 27 September in the stadium where we will recognise the outstanding contribution this wonderful group of students have made to Hunter Sports High over the past six years.

Year 11 students will sit their exams from September 21-28 (Weeks 9 & 10) before they commence their Year 12 HSC studies next term. Many Year 11 students will take to the stage next week in front of fellow students and staff to present speeches ahead of elections for our 2019 school leaders. The speeches will take place on Thursday 30th August and our new leaders will be announced and inducted at an assembly on Thursday 13th September. 2019 will be a very significant year to lead Hunter Sports High School with the official opening of the new school and many important events taking place throughout the year. Good luck to all our nominees - we know Hunter Sports High will be in good hands!

NAPLAN Online Readiness Test

Starting this week, schools across NSW will be participating in the NAPLAN Online school readiness test. The school readiness test is a ‘practice run’ designed to help schools assess their technical and administrative readiness for the transition to NAPLAN Online.

Hunter Sports High School students in Years 7 and 9 will be participating in the readiness test between Monday 27th August and Friday 31st August 2018.

The readiness test will involve students in Years 7 and 9 sitting two, 40-minute assessments, a writing test and a combined numeracy/literacy test. Student participation in the readiness test is an opportunity for them to become familiar with the NAPLAN Online test format. It is not an assessment of student ability and there will be no reporting of student results. It is important to note that participation in the school readiness test has no effect on students’ NAPLAN results from the tests students sat in May.

More information about NAPLAN Online is available on the department’s NAPLAN Online website:

Celebrating Science Week

HSHS students shared their love of science with Windale primary students for National Science Week.

Hunter Sports High students celebrated National Science Week last week by experimenting in their brand new science labs and passing on their love of science to students at Windale Public School.

In keeping with this year's Science Week theme 'Game Changers and Change Makers', Mr Handley and his Big Picture Science class have been working on three key science projects which they then delivered to the primary students. The projects were designed around inventions and discoveries which have really made a difference to society and the environment.

One of the activities saw students in a bridge-building contest, aiming to build a bridge spanning 30cm with a set number of paddle pop sticks to see which could support the most weight. Students worked in groups to solve this problem and built a bridge that could support over 3kg. The second project focused on the effect of acidification on our oceans and how this may impact crustaceans. Students got to have a hands on experience with eggs that could bounce after being soaked in vinegar. The final project explored density and how this is important in our modern world.

Congratulations Mrs Ingram

Mrs Ingram received the 2019 Premier's Language Scholarship from Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education Rob Stokes.

Hunter Sports High language teacher Mrs Shanelle Ingram was awarded the 2019 Premier’s Language Teacher Scholarship last week at a reception at the Mint in Sydney. Mrs Ingram was presented with the award by the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. The $15,000 scholarship is for studying innovative language teaching practices and Mrs Ingram intends to research the use of technologies including robots, augmented reality, virtual reality and 3D printing to enhance language learning in the classroom. She will also visit leading technology companies in Japan and South Korea to support her research. This was the first time the scholarship was offered in this category and it was open all language teachers across NSW. Congratulations Mrs Ingram!

Jason Sangha returns to see new school

Former student Jason Sangha visited HSHS recently and presented the school with his first baggy green cap and Australian World Cup team shirt.

Former student and Australian Under 19 cricketer Jason Sangha paid a visit to Hunter Sports High on Friday 10th August. He caught up with teachers and had a look around the new school before presenting his first baggy green cap and Australian World Cup team shirt to Director of Sport Mr Pascoe and his old coach and Deputy Principal Mr Curry. Jason was honoured to see his image taking pride of place at the entrance to the school's new administration building, representing the wealth of talent that has come through our school. Jason is currently in the NSW Team and will play with Sydney Thunder in the upcoming Big Bash season. Thanks Jason for taking the time to visit us and for inspiring other students with your story of success.

Transition Advisor Assisting Students from School to Work

Mrs Griffin is supporting students in their transition from school to work and further study.

Mrs Kellie Griffin is Hunter Sports High's Transition Advisor. Her role is to encourage and support students to engage in activities and programs that prepare them for successful transitions to further education, training and employment.

Mrs Griffin is working closely with the students and their parents and carers in the ‘Personalised Accountable Learning’ class, which is commonly known as PAL at HSHS. The students in this class are experiencing positive outcomes and report that the support they are provided is highly valued. So far this year we have seen improvements in attendance for the majority of PAL students, completion of TAFE YES courses in Child Care and Computer Gaming and Coding, participation in community access and travel training excursions as well as strong connections with community organisations including, but not limited to, the PCYC, Salvation Army Plus, Youth on Track and Centrelink. Students are also taking advantage of the opportunity to participate in work placements based on personal needs and interests, such as a diesel mechanic at Solo Waste, cake decorating at Designer Delights, childcare at Wandiyali Child Care Centre, and teaching at Wiripaang and Windale primary schools.

For more information and/or support for a successful transition through school to post-school education, training and employment, feel free to call the school and speak to Mrs Griffin.

News from the Support Unit

Our Support Unit students are loving their new classrooms and Coffee Shop.
A smooth transition into spectacular new classrooms

Staff and students have settled in well to our new space which comprises three classrooms, a kitchen and an outdoor learning space. The furniture has been arranged to facilitate a variety of learning activities and students are enjoying using the jelly chairs, the large touch screens and writing on the special desks. Many staff and visitors have commented that the Support Unit boasts the best views in the school!

Coffee Shop

Our Coffee Shop is back up and running, much to the delight of staff and Support Unit students. This program is such valuable real world experience for students to learn the operations of working in a kitchen and at the front-of-house. A big thank you to Ms. Stewart for her experience and expertise in running the kitchen and planning the weekly menu.

Support Unit Camp

The Support Unit camp to the Blue Mountains is getting closer. Parents and carers - a reminder that if you have not already paid in full this needs to be done by September 5th so we can finalise numbers. It promises to be a lot of fun and a great opportunity to visit a beautiful part of the world.

Work Experience

Many Support Unit students are successfully participating in a work experience program one day a week. Chloe Naismith, Ryan Gallagher and Rikki Franklin have received positive feedback from their work supervisors. Well done students and thank you to Ms. Mogg who has made this possible by liaising with employers and facilitating completion of paperwork.

Recycling

The Jet class (with Ms. Dickson leading the charge) have taken on the responsibility of the school recycling program. All new classrooms across the school now have a recycling bin for paper and cardboard which is collected weekly by the students.

The school is also very committed to recycling cans and bottles and the new dual bins around the playground are assisting with this. The Jet class visit a Return and Earn point each fortnight and recycle the cans and bottles collected. Ms. Dickson’s passion for recycling continues to drive this program forward.

Engaging in English

Greetings from the English Faculty! We are delighted to now be conducting our lessons from within our excellent new school! Our new environment is wonderful and both staff and students alike are revelling in the splendour of our new learning spaces. Here’s what’s happening within the faculty:

  • Ms Lindstrom is back from a brief long service leave break. In her absence, Ms Sykes assumed the Head Teacher role and many thanks go to her for undertaking this position.
  • We welcome back Ms Outred from maternity leave. She is present Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday and Ms Knight remains with the Faculty on Monday, Thursday & Friday.
  • Year 12 have completed their Trial HSC exams and the papers are currently being marked. Their final assessment task is also just over the horizon. It’s the last chance therefore to improve their ranking. Time to study!
  • Year 11 are engaged in their final module before they transform into Year 12 students in Term 4. English Studies students are engaged with ‘Music and the World of Rock’, Standard students are creating their own website about a contemporary issue that concerns them, and the Advanced class are exploring how ‘Narratives Shape our World’ while reading ‘Lion – A Long Way Home’.
  • Year 10 have recently completed their selections for the Year 11 English course in 2019 and are also considering how texts are adapted and appropriated to create new texts.
  • Year 9 are undertaking their novel study and considering how the characters and issues within the texts broaden their understanding of the wider world.
  • Year 8 and Year 7 are also immersed in a novel study. Here, the worlds which the characters inhabit and the problems they face teach our students empathy and understanding. The magic of books is casting a spell over the students.
  • The ALERT Literacy Program continues for Year 7, 8 and 9. This term the emphasis is on helping students develop their overall writing and responding skills.

Making a mark in Maths

Years 7 -10 Practical Assessment in Mathematics

This Term in Mathematics all students from Years 7 -10 will be participating in a Practical Assessment Task (PAT). Throughout a unit of work students are awarded marks for their:

  • engagement and application in class
  • completion of a specially designed in class learning activity
  • summary sheet at the completion of the topic
  • post unit quiz.

The marks for these components are combined to give the overall mark for the designated outcomes.

The PAT topics are:

  1. Year 7: Area and Volume - Tetracubes
  2. Year 8: Probability - Spinners
  3. Year 9: Investigating Data - Smarties
  4. Year 10 5.2/5.1: Probability - Dice Differences
  5. Year 10 5.3: Graphs - Parabola Investigation

The purpose of this type of assessment in Mathematics is to prepare students for the types of assessment they will complete in Years 11 and 12 and also to provide students with feedback about their effort and application to the learning process. By rewarding students for their effort and hard work we hope to motivate students to continue to work hard and promote a ‘Growth Mindset’ - a belief that they can improve their learning and intelligence over time. Through the completion of PAT students are developing their understanding through inquiry, exploration and problem solving. These are some of the essential skills of working mathematically.

Senior Mathematics News:

Students in Year 12 have recently completed their Trial HSC examinations. There have been some outstanding results throughout our Extension 1, Mathematics and General Mathematics courses and we congratulate our students for their sustained hard work and preparation for these important tasks. Students will now complete the last topic of their course and then begin a structured revision program leading into the HSC exams early in Term 4.

Notice for Year 11 Standard 2 Students
Mrs Beckett, Mr Love & Mr McSpadden's Year 11 Standard 2 Maths classes will all need this new textbook.

Students studying this course are required to purchase a CAMBRIDGE MATHEMATICS STANDARD 2 textbook for the Year 12 course beginning in Term 4. The textbook for this course is due to be released on 31st August and can be purchased through any online or local book seller. The cost is approximately $75 but this will vary from retailer to retailer. More details about this will go home in a note to parents in Week 7 once the books have been released for sale by the publisher.

HSIE students learning about the world in outdoor classrooms

Students are loving the new outdoor learning spaces where they're learning all about landscapes, medieval Europe, climate change and human rights.

As is the case around the school, the HSIE faculty has eagerly approached the new teaching spaces. The respect for the learning environment and responsibility of the students in the new school is to be commended, and as a result we are seeing some great work from students in all years.

In Year 7, students are currently learning about landscapes and landforms. Students are investigating a global landscape and learning about the different geographical processes that create distinctive landforms. To apply their knowledge of the characteristics of a desert landscape, Mr. Harrison's class had to work in teams to create a plan for survival after a plane crash in the Tanami Desert.

Year 8 are currently on a journey through life in Medieval Europe. Students are quickly learning that life in Medieval Europe was not all castles and feasts! They have discovered what the life of knight was really like and have also investigated some of the worst jobs in history. Coming up soon is the Black Death.

Year 9 are currently tackling some of the biggest issues not only in Australia but around the world - our changing environments. Extinction of species, management of limited resources and climate change are all a part of a challenging study into human activity and the current and future impact on our environment.

Students in Year 10 are studying the evolving nature of rights and freedoms after World War II. This period of history saw monumental steps and also significant challenges to the global recognition of human rights. A study of activists provides students with an insight into significant individuals who have shaped our modern world.

For our senior students, Year 11 will soon sit their end of course examinations. They are strongly encouraged to start their preparations as soon as possible. Year 12 students are almost at the end of the educational journey. Trial HSC examinations are completed and once again, they are strongly encouraged to begin making preparations for their HSC exams.

YEAR 11 CROSSROADS SNOW TRIP

Year 11 students are having a ball at the snow for the annual Crossroads program. It looks like their teachers are having a lot of fun too!

AROUND THE GROUNDS: SPORT NEWS

Our students have had many successes in sporting arenas around the state over recent weeks. Here are some of the many, many highlights:

Some of our outstanding sporting achievers over recent weeks.
congratulations kurt!

Congratulations to Year 11 student Kurt Donoghue who represented Australia in the Youth Touch World Cup in Malaysia last week. Kurt's Mixed 18s team went through the tournament undefeated and beat New Zealand 10-8 in the gold medal match on Saturday to claim the World Cup title. Hunter Sports High's touch football coach Karley Banks also represented at the tournament as the Assistant Coach of the Australian Boys 20s team, while former students Mathew Smith and Floyd Tighe were both members of the Boys 18s team. Australia won all six divisions against New Zealand to convincingly claim a clean sweep of the World Cup competition. Well done to all!

Annie plays for Young Matildas

Year 11 student Annie Grove was selected as part of the 23-player Young Matildas squad that competed in the 2018 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship held in Indonesia during the school holidays in July. Annie played in the third game for the Australian Under 20's team against Cambodia, winning 12-0 to progress to the semi-finals. The Australian team was in Group A of the competition and played other pool games against the senior national teams of Malaysia, Timor-Leste and Thailand. They eventually faced Thailand again in the final and went down 3-2 to finish as runners up at the tournament. Congratulations Annie!

Trio in Training for Junior Matildas
Kirsty, Tiahna & Ruby were all selected to attend the Australian Junior Matildas Training Camps in Canberra.

Three Hunter Sports High students were among 23 of Australia's brightest female footballers selected to participate in the Westfield Junior Matildas training camps held at the AIS this month in preparation for the 2019 AFC U16 Women's Championship Qualifiers in the Kyrgyz Republic in September. Kirsty Fenton (Year 9) and Tiahna Robertson (Year 10) took part in the first camp from August 6-10, while Ruby Jones (Year 9) joined Kirsty in Canberra this week for the second camp. The selection process was highly competitive and the Junior Matilda's team will be named early next month ahead of a final team camp from September 5-9 and four matches (against Palestine, Indonesia, Kyrgyz Republic and Chinese Taipei) in Bishkek from September 17-23. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement girls and good luck in the final selections!

Our Open Girls football team went down narrowly 2-1 against Westfields Sports High in yesterday's Puma Cup Final. The girls were 1-nil down at half-time and pulled back to 1-1 with 15 minutes to go, before conceding another goal seven minutes later. Well done to all the girls on this fantastic effort - they are a young team, most of whom will be backing up to play in the Under 15 Bill Turner Trophy quarter final next week.

Netball News

Our netballers have had a busy few weeks. Both the Year 7/8 team and the Year 9/10 team made it all the way through to the grand finals of the TAFE NSW Schools Cup Regional Finals last week but unfortunately both were beaten in tough games by St Peters Maitland and Mackillop to come in runners up. Congratulations to all the girls! Meanwhile, our Open Netball team has qualified for the CHS State Championships that will be played in Wollongong in September. Good luck girls!

Touch footballers 3rd in state

Our Open Boys Touch team put in a super effort in the finals of the CHS Touch Championships last week, finishing in third place after going down to Narara Valley High 7-4. Congratulations to all the boys on a great effort and for the outstanding sportsmanship shown throughout the competition.

boys Hockey team into Top 8

Congratulations to our Boys Knockout Hockey Team who defeated Parkes High School 2 - 1 in the Round of 16 State Knockout Competition, with Adam Sherret and Jackson Newcombe both scoring a goal each. The boys are now through to the quarter finals (the top eight teams in the state) that will be held in Lithgow on 19 & 20 September. Good luck boys!

ATHLETES OFF TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

An incredible thirty-two Hunter Sports High students have qualified for the NSW CHS State Athletics Championships to be held in Sydney from 5-7 September. Outstanding performances at the Hunter Regional Carnival earlier this month saw 19 students finish in first or second place in individual events (see below). Four relay teams finished in front of the field and one came a close second, sending them all through to Sydney to take on the best in the state. Congratulations to all athletes who represented HSHS at the regional carnival and good luck to all at State!

With so many talented students at our school and so many representing at academic and sporting events far and wide, we try our best to keep up-to-date and acknowledge all their incredible achievements. Many students represent in events run outside of the school system so if we do miss something, please feel free to share the good news by sending a message (and photos if you have any) on either our Facebook page or via email to: hunterspt-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au and we will make sure we let our school community know.

STUDENT WELLBEING

safer drivers course

Lake Macquarie PCYC at Windale runs a Safer Drivers Course (SDC) for Learner Drivers once a month as well a Saturday class each month at either Belmont or Charlestown. The Safer Drivers Course is carefully tailored to provide young learners (aged 17-25) with a positive and awareness-building way to reduce their vulnerability to risks on the road.

The course is not about the technical requirements of driving, it’s about helping young people understand the risks they face on the roads, providing the right guidance to deal with risky situations and doing this in a positive and engaging environment. This ultimately provides tangible outcomes for lifelong road safety through low-risk driving skills. The course aims to help young learner drivers be better prepared for when they transition to solo driving, understanding that they are at their highest risk for fatal crashes in the six-month period directly after they receive their P1 provisional licence. By providing teenagers and young adults a positive and interactive environment for road safety they will gain a solid foundation of low-risk driving strategies and habits.

For more information about the course please contact the PCYC on 4948 6622.
