Route 66: Albuquerque to Amarillo Trip Report for Tom Bol Photo Workshops

Starting Point: Albuquerque, New Mexico

We kicked off our workshop at the historic El Vado Motel (1937) where we photographed neon signs both statically and in slow motion to show cars streaking by.

Santa Rosa, New Mexico

Classic cars kept everyone busy at the 66 Car Museum in Santa Rosa. Indoors, outdoors, rusty and shiny - there was something for everyone.

Tucumcari, New Mexico

Many of the best neon signs on Route 66 are found in Tucumcari. We spent out first evening photographing our model, Emma with a continuous light and using 7 speed lights with gels to illuminate the classic cars in front of the Blue Swallow Motel.

Glenrio, Texas

Scenes from the movie "The Grapes of Wrath" were filmed in the area near San Jon and Glenrio, Texas. We explored old gas stations and motels looking for creative ways to create images.

Adrian, Texas

Adrian is the midpoint of Route 66. We worked on multiple exposure images to take in all the historic signs around us.

Amarillo, Texas

Cadillac Ranch, a Muffler Cowboy and the Big Texan are just some of the Route 66 highlights in Amarillo.

Carol
Tucumcari, New Mexico

We spent our last morning photographing old neon signs at first light. With so many to choose from in Tucumcari we stayed busy.....

Gas pumps provided historical touches all along our route.....
