Getting the Most From Your Off-Season

Bill Roman

A seasonal club is all too typically divided into a high-season and an off-season. While emphasis is placed on the glory of the high-season, it is the diligence and focus placed on the off-season that pays real dividends. I always joke that when we approach our high-season, a switch is flipped and we are sent into high gear, but, in reality, we press the GO button to initiate the comprehensive plan we developed during the off-season.

Outboards & Inboards: Recommendations for Your Program

Charlie Zechel

At Boston’s Community Boating, Inc. (CBI), we operate 11 safety launches, nine outboards and two inboards. Two of our launches are V8 inboard engines. Our programs operate from April 1 to October 31, seven days per week. From June 1 through September 1, in order to meet the demands of our programs, we require that safety launches are available to operate seven days per week with no down time whatsoever. This is a tall order so here’s how we’ve addresses the challenge.

An Open Letter to the Sailing Community About Safety

Jack Gierhart, CEO of US Sailing

As many of you are aware, the sailing community experienced several tragic incidents on the water over the past several months that have impacted the broader boating community around the county and the entire marine industry. All of us at US Sailing – our staff, Board of Directors and volunteers – are deeply saddened be these tragedies. Our thoughts go out to affected families and communities as they navigate through these very difficult times. We will look to assist these sailing communities as they assess the accidents, and work together to prevent incidents like this in the future.

Hurricane Season: Resources for Sailors & Sailing Organizations

US Sailing has been watching the terrible consequences of these recent hurricanes to sailing communities in the Gulf Coast states, primarily Texas and Florida, as well as the U.S. Territories in the Caribbean.

Our thoughts go out to all of you who have been affected by these destructive storms. We stand by you during these difficult and challenging times as you look to recover and rebuild.

We are assembling special offers and discounts provided by our marine industry friends including Zim Sailing, Ronstan, Marlow Ropes and Jamestown Distributors. Check out these useful resources for preparation of and recovery from storms:

US Sailing has organized a compilation of presenters and on-water demos for kiteboarding – a growing area of interest in our sport:

  • NeilPryde, a 2018 sponsor of Sailing Leadership Forum, will be onsite introducing their new and emerging lines of one-design kiteboarding and windsurfing classes.
  • IKA Formula Kite World Champion and US Sailing’s 2016 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, Daniela Moroz, will be participating in NeilPryde's equipment demonstrations and racing on the water.
  • The International Kiteboarding Association President and Training Manager will deliver an interactive presentation on IKA's development of its International Kiteboard Training Program.
  • Witness mock kite races, learn kite racing logistics, recognize the ease of kite circle inclusion at your regatta and see and touch the innovative gear.

US Sailing Accepting Nominations for 2017 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Awards

Recognize Deserving Sailors From Your Organization

US Sailing is now accepting nominations for these prestigious awards, widely acknowledged as the foremost individual sailing honors in the nation. Through November 30, 2017, each member of US Sailing may nominate the one male and one female sailor they believe turned in the most outstanding on-the-water performance during the 2017 calendar year.

This season, several of North America’s premier offshore races, yacht clubs and organizations such as US Sailing have teamed together to create a survey to learn what is most important to ocean sailors.
