50 YEARS STRONG
Toyota forklifts came to the United States in 1967 with a goal: to help people carry the load. Over the past 50 years, these machines have done just that and so much more. Today, a forklift rolls off the line at Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufacturing in Columbus, Indiana, every two and half minutes. It's where we’ve worked, day in and day out, since 1990. It’s where we strive to continually improve our products and our people.
Our forklifts are distributed across North America with the help of the largest dealer network in the industry, 66 dealerships strong. It’s what makes Toyota the number one forklift brand in America - a feat that can only be attributed to all of the individuals who have propelled Toyota forward over the past five decades.
2017 marks Toyota Forklifts' 50th anniversary of selling forklifts in the United States, a milestone otherwise known as the "golden anniversary." And what better way to commemorate this achievement than with a golden forklift of our very own?
This forklift started off the same way as hundreds of thousands of forklifts that came before, but it was not without its special touches. After a team of engineers put dozens of drawings together to communicate all the components of this unique paint job, a team of eight skilled painters spent eight hours over two Saturdays to give the forklift the nine coats of paint it took to make its bare bones sparkle and shine.
THE STAR OF THE ASSEMBLY LINE
Against the backdrop of its grey and orange counterparts, you couldn't miss the golden frame of this forklift as it makes its way through the assembly line.
Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufacturing (TIEM) workers had never met a forklift quite like this one. As eye-catching as it was, it was handled just like every truck that ventures through the factory, receiving the same routine checks at each stop along the way.
Still, there was an unmistakable excitement in the workers who were part of this forklift's journey that day. They knew they were working on something extra special - something that was going to serve as a reminder of Toyota's growth and prosperity over the decades.
THE FINAL TOUCH
Building a forklift like this one is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, an event that nobody involved could ever forget. After months of planning, the careful crafting of this forklift was complete. It takes many moving parts to build a Toyota forklift, and with each truck that rolls off the line, there is a sense of pride felt by all employees.
A SURPRISE REVEAL
Shortly after its assembly was complete, this forklift was met with applause at a special unveiling ceremony. There were smiles and laughter all around as associates had their photos taken with the golden forklift. They cheered, knowing they were celebrating a victory they'd all played a part in achieving.
