Grind your own beans
For the absolute best coffee, grind your own beans right before brewing. This ensures the freshest, most flavorful cup of coffee you can possibly have. A burr grinder works the best, but any grinder will do. Don't have one? No worries. Just keep your pre-ground coffee in an airtight container or canister away from heat, light, and moisture.
use fresh filtered water
Water can make a huge difference in how your coffee will taste. For the best cup of joe, use the freshest, cleanest, filtered water you can get. You can use bottled water as long as it's labeled spring water or drinking water. Don't use reverse osmosis water, since this process removes the important minerals that make a cup of coffee so tasty.
use fresh coffee
The freshest coffee makes the best coffee. Once the bag is opened, coffee will only last about two weeks before it needs to be replaced. Old coffee will take on an ashy odor and taste bitter. Exposure to oxygen deteriorates the oils and molecules in coffee over time. If it doesn't smell as good as the day you opened it, toss it.
