AMS Tiger Cub Camp and Parent Night
AMS will host the 2020-2021 Tiger Cub Camp and Parent Night on January 28, 2020. Tiger Cub Camp is a great opportunity for incoming students to explore the different electives offered before making their final course selections. While on the tour, teachers will give a brief description of the class and, in some cases, the students may see a short performance. Later that evening, parents are invited to hear about the electives and the process of making course selections in Naviance.
January 28th- Tiger Cub Camp 9:00 am- 11:00 am (students will tour the Fine Arts Department)
January 28th- AMS Incoming 6th Grade Parent Night 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Timbers Tonight Update
As some have noticed, we have not shared a Timbers Tonight episode in the past two weeks. This is because we are working to ensure we get permission from authors prior to sharing their books on YouTube. We have not been successful with getting that permission, so we are seeking another way (that's not open to the public) to share our staff reading stories. We hope to bring this back very soon!
Celebrating Our Staff
Teachers and staff have been touched by your words of appreciation for what they do! Please continue to let me know what specific staff members have done to make your child(ren) love Timbers! News from Nurse Shannon
Attention Parents of 5th Grade Girls:
Timbers Elementary will be conducting a spinal screening on Tuesday December 10th, 2019.
Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age. Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is often confused with poor posture. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others can worsen with time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity, which can affect a person’s appearance and health.
The procedure for screening is simple. The school nurse, who has been specially trained, will look at your child’s back while she stands and then bends forward. For this examination, girls will be seen separately in the privacy of the clinic.
ALL STUDENTS MUST REMOVE THEIR SHIRT FOR THIS EXAM. Girls are asked to wear a tank top UNDERNEATH their shirt on exam day.
Parents will be notified of the results of the screening ONLY if professional follow-up is necessary. This screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care and check ups.
According to state law, all GIRLS in grade 5 must be screened. If you DO NOT wish to have your child screened, you are to submit an affidavit of religious exemption to the school nurse office no later than Tuesday, December 10, 2019. This form can be obtained from the nurse upon request. Failure to participate in the school screening will require a statement from your medical provider with the results of a forward-bend test which has occurred during the school year of the required testing.
Please Help Us Fight the Flu!
Timbers participates in the Houston Food Banks's Backpack Buddy Program. The program allows students who qualify for free/reduced lunch to qualify for additional student meals/snacks be sent home for the weekend. If you would like to enroll in the Backpack program, please notify Ms. Collins at 281-641-2007 or Marylana.Collins@humbleisd.net.
Guidance/Great 8 Skills
Timbers follows Humble ISD's adoption of the Great 8 character education skills. Timbers students are focusing on self-management skills for the second nine weeks. Students will continue to demonstrate self-awareness and personal responsibility through managing emotions an actions.
When your child(ren) are absent from school, you must call the absence hotline at (281)641-2019 for each day absent, and send a note to school the day they return. If the school does not receive a phone call or note from a guardian, the absence is considered unexcused.
Parents may purchase a frozen birthday treat for their child’s class during their lunch time. Frozen treats may be purchased from the cafeteria for 75 cents each to be distributed after the children finish their lunch. Please notify the cafeteria at (281) 641-2008 one week prior to the event in order to have enough treats on hand for all interested. If parents wish to bring cupcakes to school, they may do so. However, please ensure that the treats are store bought as well as notify the teacher two days in advance so that the teacher has ample time to contact the parents of those with allergies arranging for an alternate treat. Parents may drop off the treats at the front office so that birthdays may be celebrated the final 20 minutes of the school day. As a reminder of district policy, students are not permitted to pass out party invitations at school unless every student in the class receives one.
