Victoria development By: Niracha

The first attempt to settle Victoria was in 1803 .On the 7 th of October that year lieutenant Colonel Collins arrived from England with the intention of founding , in Port Phillip . The expedition landed on the shores of Port Phillip , near Sorrento , several explorations of the land were made but at the end of a few months the attempt at colonization was abandoned, as the place was believed to be unsuitable for settlement. For twenty years thereafter the District of Port Phillip continued to be neglected.

Until 1851 Victoria was a part of New South Wales , from 1851 until 1909 it was the Colony of Victoria, with its own government within the British Empire . In 1909 it became a state of the new Commonwealth of Australia.
