The Alchemist and the Inspiration of the World By: Lexi Jepsen per.4

“We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it’s our life or our possessions or property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand” (76 )

This quote talks about when our world is shaken around us, even the slightest change, we end up in an uncomfortable situation. The ones who aren't uncomfortable for long, are the ones who realize that God has a plan for them. The fear that is associated with this change in our lives, subsides or better yet goes away with the Faith in God. I have gone through a hardship myself, were my world was shaken so drastically that I wasn't able to make a slight adjustment. The way I was able to get through it was the faith in God and knowing he had a plan. All I was able to think about was the hope that I would be okay in the end, and I was.

“You must always know what it is that you want.” (58 )

By always knowing what you want, but also going after what you want, can make your life happier and more exciting. This quote was spoken by the old king and he was speaking to Santiago because Santiago was very indecisive about what he wanted and he couldn't make up his mind. Santiago was able to apply this to his life by being able to chose the one thing his heart wanted the most. I can also apply this to my life because I feel that my heart has desired to become a nurse, more so now than ever, since my dad became sick. To continue with what I want I am going to take an ROP course in High School and make sure to finish collage with the highest nursing degree.

“When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it.” (62)

When you are so desired to go after the things you want, everything around you within your surroundings will come together and help you achieve the end result. Along Santiago's journey, he realized that the universe was helping him in ways that he didn't know. One example is how he went from the crystal shop and wanting to go back to being a shepherd, to following his personal legend and achieving it with help. Recently, my dad and I planned a day trip to the desert, and it was the first time since he was sick. That same day I was scheduled to work in the morning and it was supposed to be raining, so we didn't know if it was all going to work out. That day came and I showed up to work to find out that it was canceled due to the rain the night before. It really felt like everything came together just so my dad and I could have a little fun.

¨We make a lot of detours, but were always heading for the same direction¨ (77)

Even though life may throw challenges your way and you have to make adjustments around them, but you will always end up back in the same direction you were headed in. Santiago had many detours that continued throughout the book, but no matter what he faced, he ended in the same direction he was headed in, his personal legend to the pyramids for treasure. My life has been faced with many detours, but when I face them, I shift a way around it and I don't let it get me off the path I was was headed in. One major detour my family and I faced was when my dad got sick, but we were all able to shift our lives to make it all work in the end. Many challenges may face you, but no matter what adjustment you make, you will still be on the same path.

“Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure.” (130)

When your heart, or gut pulls you toward something, that is where your "treasure" or your true happiness and fulfillment is in the world. In the story, Santiago's heart is pulling him to his personal legend even when his heart is full of fear about the possibility of failure. When my dad was starting to get sicker, I was fearful of the outcome. I had no idea how it would work, but I never gave up, my heart told me that I was the one that was going to help make all of it happen. The fear that your heart feels when it's afraid of the bad possibilities, it is still telling you under all that to go after what it is pulling you toward.

“Well, when I took my sheep through the fields some of them might have died if we had come upon a snake. But that’s the way life is with sheep and with shepherds.” (54 )

To live your life in fear of all the bad possibilities, you will soon find out that you wouldn't be living a life at all. Santiago was fearful of continuing on with his personal legend when he got all the money he needed to get to his destination, stolen. Letting your fear take over would give you have no life at all because all you would be thinking of is 'what would happen if I did this?'. If I had let my fears take over when my dad was in the hospital for three months, I wouldn't be able to do what I do now for him, which gives him a life again and to be happy.
