Trey Q & A Conversation with Hope's worship Director

Since joining Hope Community Church in April of 2015, Trey Heffinger, worship director, has proven himself a passionate advocate for his craft. Fueled by caffeine and Jesus, the former frontman for Echoing Angels and staff writer for Capitol Records exudes an edgy energy. Recently we had the chance to sit down and talk about his influences, his challenges and what’s next for music at Hope.

Family: Wife, Emily, children James and Eliza

How did you get interested in music? I was born in a musical family. Literally everyone in my family on my mom's side and on my dad's side can sing incredibly. For a long time I thought everyone was born able to sing. But as I got older i realized not everyone’s singing was as pleasant, haha. Several generations on my mom’s side and dad’s side of the family used their gift of music in the church and serving in the church. I am now the fourth generation of worship directors. I have tried to do other things but God continues to pull me back into His church to lead.

Who is your biggest influence? My first and biggest influence would be my parents (Jim and Marcy). They have always shown me the love of Jesus and the love for music. They took me everywhere when they traveled to lead worship and at 3.5 years old I actually got on stage and started leading too. We are a product of our influence and I would ask God every time to let me be the son to Jim and Marcy. What you see in me is what my family and parents gave and passed on to me. Their passion, selflessness, compassion, drive, humility, honoring, servant heart, love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace is what I witnessed. I pray I give the same to my children and to God’s church.

What excites you most about leading worship at Hope? The opportunity to grow a worship team, raise up new leaders and challenging us into a lifestyle of worship for all ages, backgrounds and stories. It’s for all!!!

What’s the biggest challenge of leading a church this size? The challenge of reaching all ages, backgrounds at multiple campuses. Each campus is important and each worship experience should be on the same level of excellence.

What are you digging right now? My family, food, sports and writing. New music — John Mayer, Johnnyswim, Colony House, Bethel, The Gray Havens and Switchfoot.

What’s next for the worship team? The worship team is releasing two original songs soon. This will be the first time Hope Community Church as released music to the world woohoo. We are going to be working on a Christmas EP (this summer, to be released in November) and praying that we can raise funds to start a full length worship album in the fall that would feature all of our amazing worship leaders.
