Early Life : Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. She has a Lebanese father, William Mebarak Chadid, and a Colombian mother, Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado. She started writing poetry as a four-year old and also loved to dance from childhood, she soon earned the nickname "la bailarina del vientre" (belly dancing girl). She wrote her very first song at the age of 8 and signed her fist record deal when she was 13. When her first 2 albums failed she realized she needed to become apart of its production.

Music : After her first two albums flopped, Shakira took the control of her third album. Released in 1996, Pies Descalzos, meaning "bare feet," sold more than 3 million copies. The album featured her trademark sound, a blend of Latin, rock and Arabic musical styles. Her follow-up record, Dónde Están Los Ladrones? (1998), which translated to "Where are the thieves?", reached the top of Billboard's Latin charts. Not long after, Shakira won her first Grammy Award (best Latin pop album) for Shakira : MTV Unplugged (2000). She became known for her strong vocals and incredible hip-shaking belly dance moves.

Biggest Album : Her debut English album ‘Laundry Service’ featured her lead single ‘Whenever, Wherever’ is her best selling album today with a worldwide sale in of 20 million copies. It went Multi-Platinum in several countries. The single ‘Hips Don’s Lie’ from the album ‘Oral Fixation, Vol. 2’ peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and also reached the No. 1 spot in 55 other countries. It became her signature song and is the best selling single of the 21st century.

Albums & Genre : Shakira has released so many albums over the years. Her first major album was Pies Descalzos (1996) and latest one Shakira (2014). Her music is mainly classified as latin pop and her songs reach up to #1 on the Latin Charts.
