Welcome and About Us

Angela Allison - K-14 Career Pathways Statewide Technical Assistance Provider for Southern California

Angela Gomez-Holbrook - Digital Media Arts Instructor, Coastline Community College

2 Year Journey from classroom to statewide and Back again

  • In July of 2015 Angela Allison and I were awarded a two year grant to become the Technical Assistance Providers for Career Pathways for the K-14 system in California
  • After spending 16 years in the classroom as a digital arts instructor the transition to a statewide level was smooth building on the best practices with pathways we created at GWC along with Angela Gomez-Holbrook and Angela Allison who was our dean
  • Digital Media Arts was only one of 11 sectors we worked in with 113 schools and over 2.7 million students, but became the "low hanging fruit" for our pathway projects and especially the ACA certification
  • A key component of the new WIOA legislation, Perkins V, and other measurements for success in education is 3rd Party Industry Certifications. Providing a skills benchmark for students integration of these certifications can play a major roll in the employability and workflow integration in the classroom.

Highlights

  • Industry Credentials Valued By California Employers & Educators site http://doingwhatmatters.cccco.edu/LaunchBoard/IndustryCredentials.aspx
  • WIOA Alignment of 3rd Party Industry Credentials with Career Pathways
  • ACA Training at the Digital Media Educators Conference 2 years in a row with Angela Gomez-Holbrook and Certiport
  • Certification Presentations State and World Wide speaking to the importance of them in Career Pathways
  • Bringing in key instructors like Angela Gomez-Holbrook into the training positions. This was a gradual transition from DA Instructor, to ACL, to AEL for her over this period

pathways and certification

next steps

As Angela Allison and I end our grant in July of this year we are returning to the classroom with a larger picture of what is happening in the state and federal laws and funding. This is allowing us to continue the work we started not only in CA but nationwide to lead the integration of certification into the classroom and industry.

  • Adobe ACA and Certiport Regional Deployment with Orange County Department of Education Pilot Program including end to end services for the instructors
  • Promoting not only certification, but also the change of culture around certification and CTE
