PITCH - TRIGGER WARNING: SUICIDE
A man sets out on a hike into the Juneau mountains, looking for a spot to spend his last night on earth under the clear, starry sky.

Duncan has been depressed for a long, long time. Longer than not, he suspects. He's made preparations before, you know, written the letter, gathered the supplies, but every time something stopped him before it was too late. Not this time. This time his mind is made, the letter already mailed off. He had packed his camping gear the night before so that he could leave whenever he felt like it without having to worry about getting to the lake before sundown. As the fire crackled nearby, and the stars shone overhead, he thinks to himself that maybe he'd never been happier in his life. There's a moment of doubt, a flicker of hesitation; he takes a sip from his thermos, lays down and closes his eyes.

The main goal of this film is to raise suicide awareness, specifically focusing on how the signs of someone in trouble can easily be missed. The audience will be shocked, at first, by the ending of the film, but upon second viewing will see various red flags seeded throughout the course of the short. Like I said the main goal is to raise awareness, however any profits made from the film will be donated to the Suicide Prevention Hotline.

The film will be shot in Juneau Alaska, on local trails in local residences. Alaska has the highest rate of depression and suicide in the US, making the message of this film all the more pertinent to our community. The topic of this short is a difficult one to navigate carefully, so I feel obligated to ask anyone who is struggling or knows someone who is struggling to please call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 800-273-8255.
