At LVA, our elementary grades implement the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, or "PYP". The core structure of the PYP involves 6 units of inquiry that integrate all academic subjects in a project-based learning format.

This unit, "Earthly Inner-Uptions" focuses on inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles and the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

"We've been working on creating earthquake-proof structures to conclude our Earthly Inner-ruptions unit."
"The students started by researching how architects plan and build structures that are resistant to earthquakes. After they researched, they drew up a plan using their Chromebooks."
"When their drawings were completed, they "purchased" items within their budget to create their structures."
"They used materials such as chopsticks, masking tape, spaghetti, paper clips, marshmallows and straws."
"Building materials varied in cost, so they had to plan and spend carefully!"
"They concluded by testing their structures to see if they could withstand the shake table!" ~ Mrs. Elphick
