PIEDMONT BASEBALL, SOFTBALL and BUDDY BALL
Piedmont Baseball is a recreational youth baseball and softball program in Hockessin, Delaware. Originally founded in 1976. Piedmont is affiliated with the National Babe Ruth Program and serves some 1000 player’s ages 4 to 18 years old in the program.
Piedmont's Facility includes a T-Ball, American League, National League and Senior League Fields. Both the American and National League have lights, so games can be played under the lights. Piedmont also has two batting cages that can be used before and after games.
FARM DIVISION: 7 & 8 YEAR OLDS
All 7 & 8 year-olds are encouraged to participate in Farm League, where coaches pitch to their own team and kids learn to play a more strategic game. The emphasis is on instruction and fun, but unlike T-Ball, we will keep score, track standings, and hold a post-season tournament. Players hit pitches thrown by a coach from near the mound. Games are played on a diamond with 60-foot bases. Seven and eight year olds play in different divisions. As the season progresses, the opportunity for eight year olds to be exposed to player pitch is introduced.
AMERICAN LEAGUE: 9 & 10 YEAR OLDS
In the American League, players will learn and play baseball with most of the regular rules. Players pitch to one another, batting is continuous and limited stolen bases are allowed in this more competitive environment. Teams are formed with the primary objective of creating parity across all teams. The team selection is done with a draft. We are always seeking parents interested in coaching their child's team.
NATIONAL LEAGUE: 10-12 YEAR OLDS
In order to be considered to play in the National League, all 11 and 12 year old players must attend one of two nights of evaluations. The evaluations consists of players participating in a variety of drills, which include running, fielding, throwing and hitting. Coaches from both the East and West divisions of the National League evaluate, or rate, each player during these drills.
Ten year olds may also tryout for consideration to be in the National League. The number of 10 year olds drafted to the National League will be determined by how many 11 and 12 year olds are drafted into the west. NOT ALL 10 YEAR OLDS WILL BE DRAFTED TO THE NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST DIVISION. Any 10 year old who is not drafted is then placed in the American League.
Piedmont Softball Program (Ages 5 to 14)
Spring Recreational League:
Our Spring season runs from mid-March until first week of June. Players are introduced to all aspects of the game, with an emphasis on teaching fundamentals.
6U (Ages 5 & 6)
This is a "modified" T-Ball level that uses an 11" IncrediBall. The season begins by teaching the players the basic fundamentals of hitting, throwing, catching, running and flow of a game. Teams play games, and batters get their choice of a soft toss pitch from a coach or hitting the ball off the tee.
8U (Ages 7 & 8)
This is an instructional level of play with coach pitch. Girls learn to play a more strategic game. Players hit pitches thrown by a coach from near the mound, there are no walks, and no base stealing allowed at this age. Batting is continuous, and all players must share infield and outfield play time. Bases are 60 feet, and the mound is 35 feet from home plate. Requests can be made for other players or coaches for this age, and we will try to honor those requests.
10U (Ages 9 & 10)
Girls will learn to play with few modifications to regular Babe Ruth rules at this age level. Player pitch is introduced; however, coach pitch is still utilized. Batting is continuous, and all players must share infield and outfield play time. Limited stolen bases are allowed in this more competitive environment. Bases are 60 feet, and the mound is 35 feet from home plate. There is an evaluation for this age level in late February, and team selection is done by way of a manager’s draft, trying to create parity across all teams.
12U (Ages 11 & 12)
This division is a competitive division. The players pitch the whole game and stealing bases and leads are allowed. Batting order is still continuous, and there are minimal modifications to Babe Ruth softball rules. Bases are 60 feet, and the mound is 40 feet from home plate. There is an evaluation for this age level in late February, and team selection is done by way of a manager’s draft, trying to create parity across all teams.
14U (Ages 13 & 14)
This division is a competitive division. The players pitch the whole game and stealing bases and leads are allowed. Batting order is still continuous, and there are no modifications to Babe Ruth softball rules. Bases are 60 feet, and the mound is 43 feet from home plate. Managers select teams of equal playing ability, there is no evaluation at this age level. This age level starts mid-April.
TOURNAMENT BASEBALL and SOFTBALL:
Piedmont Baseball (Piedmont Bulls) and Softball (Piedmont Dynamite) provides an opportunity for its players to compete against teams from nearby communities through its spring/summer tournament program. Additionally, Piedmont tournament teams are selected to represent Piedmont in the Delaware state and Mid-Atlantic Regionals. Players are selected to participate on tournament teams after tryouts that are held each fall. Tournament baseball requires a high level of commitment and interest from the families and players who participate. Our tournament teams practice during the winter months and have at least 2 practices and/or games each during the travel season. In addition, players who participate in tournament baseball are required to play in our spring recreation program.
Tournament teams for Spring 2021 have already been formed. Tryouts for our 2022 teams are scheduled to be held in September 2021
BUDDY BALL: AGES 5-19 YEARS OLD
The Piedmont Buddy Ball program is designed for player’s ages 5-19 who have an intellectual or physical disability. Our Buddy Ball program goal is to enhance confidence and foster a positive recreational environment for Athletes with a cognitive or physical disability. There will be no registration fee for this league. The generosity of some local benefactors will help fund this great addition to Piedmont Baseball & Softball.
