IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES . . . IT WAS . . .
Well no, there were no "worst of times" as Charles Dickens once wrote. There is another old saying, "all good things must pass" and for me saying goodbye to the presidency of CVFF is something I knew would happen eventually the day I took the job.
What began as a two year commitment somehow turned in to eight and I'm more concerned that the eight years really only felt like two, which causes me to pause and reflect a bit. Don't worry this is no prolegomenon to a treatise on aging and wisdom, the former being inevitable and the other just outside my grasp.
My greatest joy as the leader of this group has been the number of fine people I have met and how many of them have unselfishly given of themselves to promote the club and look to its present and future. We now have a core group of young (younger?) "whipper snappers" who are set to guide us in to the new decade and hopefully beyond.
I don't intend to "go gently into that good night" as Dylan Thomas once wrote, but instead intend to "rage, rage against the dying of the light" in my own inimitable way. So plan on still seeing me writing a monthly column of some kind and of course helping out however and wherever I can. I'm not going anywhere, gold watch and rocking chair be damned.
Tight lines and fighting fish to all!
Announcing Charley Beals as the incoming president for the Conejo Valley Fly Fishers in 2020
Written by: Scott Olson
After serving the club for the past eight years I decided it was time to pass the torch to someone else to freshen things up a bit.
After an extensive search by the finest head hunters in the world we finally settled on a home grown candidate to take the reins of our august club.
Charley Beals brings a unique set of skills to the job. He is the owner of a small business, a very fine communicator and an all-around good guy. Charley is one of those people that when he says he will get something done you can forget about it, because it "gets done."
Over the past few years he has resurrected our speaker program with a melding of the consortiums speakers and local talent. The programs have been outstanding.
Charley has also revived our club outings program and volunteered his time to help our members improve their casting and general fly fishing skills. He has been an invaluable addition to our organization.
Having fished and collaborated on club projects with Charley many times I can vouch for his enthusiasm and dedication to our sport and I have no doubt that he will bring that same passion and zeal to the club presidency.
So congratulations Charley and be assured I will help where I can and stay out of the way as much as possible. - Scott Olson
