Thomas M. Cooley Influential Law Scholar and Chief Justice

Thomas was one of the University of Michigan Law School's first professors. He made a lasting impact on the school for decades working up his rank to becoming a dean. Before Cooley's developed the Michigan law school he served as a Michigan Supreme court chief justice for 20 years.

The Cooley Doctorine was one of his various famous works, the main premise was “local government is a matter of absolute right; and the state cannot take it away.”
Cooley was also know for his various academic works. He focused on ways to enhance our legal system for the fairness of the whole. He wrote works on tort law and his theories were often taken into action by other members of the judicial system because of their relevance to American law.
