In this text you are going to read about tigers. The text is about: their behavior, how they look like, what they eat and much more. Enjoy!

Tigers are now the biggest living cat species. Tiger are species that belong to the cat family (Patera family). In that family does lions, leopards, jaguars and snow leopards belong. Tigers occurs in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, weast Malaysia, Sumatra, eastern Russia and possible in China. Tigers has been one of the big five animals in Asia.

Male bengal-tigers can weigh up to 200-270 kg. But the sibirian male tigers can weigh over 300 kg. The smallest under spice (sumatra tiger) weighs just around 100-140 kg. Generally does females weigh less than males. The body length is between 140-280 cm. The tail length is between 60-109 cm.

The tiger is most recognizable by the fur. The fur is red/orange and has black stripes in different sizes and forms all over the fur. The throat, stomach and on the inside of the legs, is beige/white colored. The tigers in the north of the globe has much thicker fur and the color is lighter. In the south is the fur darker and thinner. Tigers are predators, they eat bigger mammals. For example: oxes, swines and deers.

Tigers pray is also domestic animals and sometimes also humans, which has been creating problems. The problems started when humans moved to tiger areas.

Tigers are mating under the whole year in the tropical areas. But especially under november and april in the colder areas. Usually does a female give birth to two to five babies. A tiger is pregnant around 94-106 days. The babies stays with their mom up two years. The tiger is the national animal in, India, malaysia and south korea.

You can think that the white colored tiger is an own species or an under species. But no, it has only been “mutated”. The white color have been caused by recessive genetic mutation. That prevents the yellow color pigment.

We humans started hunt tigers in the early 19th to the early 20th century. The result of that is that tigers is extremely endangered. Under the 1970s did we make success of the protection of tigers and the population of tigers started to grow.

But under 1980s did the amount of tigers again started to reduse. It started because of human population growing, thief-hunters…. So now are the amount of tigers only around 3200-4300. Which of them are only small isolated groups of tigers.

There is not much fossils of this species, That's why it's so hard to know exactly the evolution of tiger. The oldest find of a cat species that is similar to a tiger is found in China and Java. It´s a fossil from 2 million years ago. The fossil of the cat speices seems to be smaller than the tiger today.

It has also been fossils from Sumatra, Siberian, Altaj (a mountainrange between the limits of Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan). But it has not been any finds in America.

Tigers are usually active between dawn and dusk. But in some cases does they even hunt during the day. When tigers look for prey they go on longer routes. The routs are often between 20-25 km and sometimes even up to 80-100 km.

Tigers are excellent swimmers, unlike lions and leopards which not are that good swimmers. Because of the tigers size they have problems with climbing. Tigers live alone and therefore are only male and females miting under a short time when they shall mate. Their territory limits are marked with their urine. An average tiger lives between 20 to 25 years,
