THE FORTRESS jakarta's top junior high school comes to life after hours

Behind the bright green gates of Jakarta's top performing junior high school, Year 7 students are oblivious to the traffic that rages on the busy streets of Cikini as peak hour sets in.

Motorbikes cramp the narrow footpath, waiting to transport students home. But for some eager drivers, there will be no such luck.

Classes may have finished for the day, but the fun is just beginning for some students.

As the sun descends towards Jakarta's smoggy horizon, they linger around to make the most the afternoon.

The girls and boys play an Indonesian game called bentengen, which means 'the fortress'.

With all the teachers gone, these students have rule of the roost in Jakarta's oldest junior high school.
