The Omaha baseball team went 3-2 last week, opening with a midweek series at Air Force. On Tuesday, the Mavericks fell 24-5 but followed Wednesday by winning a 17-16 slugfest against the Falcons. Ryan Cate turned in a career-best plate performance, going 5-for-6 with two doubles, two runs scored and six RBI. Riley Herold was also 3-for-6 with a run and four RBI, and Jack Kalina went 2-for-5 with his first home run of the year. Payton Kinney picked up the win in relief, throwing 5.1 innings while allowing four runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

On Friday, Omaha kicked off the second half of conference play with a 3-1 win at North Dakota State. Sam Murphy (3-5) earned the win, holding NDSU to one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over 7.0 innings. Grant Suponchick recorded his second save, throwing 2.0 shutout innings and limiting the Bison to one hit with no walks and two strikeouts. Sam Palensky went 3-for-4 with a run, while Adam Caniglia was 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season.

NDSU won game two of the series, 10-2, on Saturday. Ryan Cate was 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Suponchick and Riley Herold were both 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Mavericks capped the weekend with a 6-3 victory on Sunday to secure the series win. Kinney (2-1) again earned the win in relief, tossing 5.0 shutout innings and holding the Bison to one hit with no walks and five strikeouts. Palensky led the Mavericks at the dish, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored.


The Omaha softball team played four road games last week, opening with a 7-4 loss to Missouri on Wednesday. Nicole Warren led UNO at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Vicky Kinney went 2-for-4 with a double.

UNO resumed Summit League play on Friday, falling 8-4 to South Dakota State. Kinney was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Hailey Bartz was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Mavericks topped the Jackrabbits 11-1 in five innings in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader. Laura Roecker tossed a complete-game three-hitter in the opener to pick up the win. Kinney was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Lia Mancuso (3-for-4, RBI, two stolen bases) and Nicole Warren (3-for-4, one RBI) also had three hits apiece.

Omaha completed the sweep of Saturday’s twinbill with a 10-4 victory. Roecker went the distance for the win, allowing four runs and three walks with seven strikeouts. Kinney, Noble and Emily Klosterman all homered to lead UNO in the series finale. Klosterman finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Noble went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Kinney (2-for-4, two RBI), Warren (2-for-3, two runs) and Kaitlynn Hunt (2-for-3) also had multi-hit games.

Vicky Kinney earned Summit League Player of the Week honors on Monday.

Mandy Boyle shot a score of 80 to lead the Omaha women's golf team on the first day of the Summit League Championship at ArborLinks in Nebraska City. The Mavericks began the second round on Monday in seventh place. The 54-hole championship runs through Tuesday.


Nyakuome Thichiot put up the sixth-best triple jump mark in school history at the John Jacobs Invitational at Oklahoma last Saturday. Thichiot’s distance of 37-06 ¾ was a personal best and was good for seventh place overall. All three of her jumps were more than 37 feet, beating her previous PR. Teammate Taleah Williams posted a season-best mark in the same event, jumping 35-03 ¾.


The Omaha men’s tennis team wrapped up its regular season dropping a pair of matches in Colorado last weekend. On Friday, UNO lost a 7-0 non-conference decision to Air Force. Nathan Reekie turned in a strong effort at No. 2 singles but ultimately fell in a three-set tilt, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Razvan Grigorescu fell in a three-set tilt at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

On Saturday, Omaha dropped a 7-0 Summit League decision to Denver. In doubles play, Grigorescu and Colin Buckley fell to No. 60 Alex Gasson and Yannik James, 6-2. Reekie proved to the toughest match for the Pioneers as he was defeated at No. 2, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5). Grigorescu dropped his first Summit League match of the season at No. 1, 6-4, 6-3.


The Omaha women's tennis team punctuated the regular season last week, opening with a 5-2 loss to South Dakota on Wednesday. Rylee Tucker and Emily Behling won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles for Omaha’s only win in doubles play. In singles, Janelle Wilson won at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3), and Michelle Lo triumphed at No. 1 (6-3, 4-6, 10-5).

On Saturday, Omaha faced Creighton on Senior Day, during which the Mavericks honored their lone senior, Kenzie Hill. UNO won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, as Lo and Wilson teamed up at No. 1 (6-4), and Tucker and Behling won at No. 2 (6-2). In singles action, Wilson mustered a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2.


Omaha Athletics honored its seniors and their teammates at the annual Maverick Awards Banquet at the LaVista Conference Center on Sunday. The award winners included:

More than 2,500 runners and walkers took part in the Claussen-Leahy Maverick Run Saturday at Baxter Arena. The event raised more than $121,000 to support UNO student-athletes through scholarships and program enhancements.
