The Clean Well Lighted Space in winter

On any day, but especially a winter day, we are drawn to the streams of light that print themselves on the surface of interior spaces. During the cold months of the year the light carries the warmth of summer through panes of glass and through our memory.

As we purposely place ourselves in these small boxes of summer we can feel, smell and touch May. Or even August.

The shadows are first to grab our attention, because shadows represent the ink on paper. But the light is the pen. The light is what we are seeking. Even in the heat of the mid-summer, when we search for the dappled shade of a cool tree, we are using the shade to get as close as we can to the warmth the light represents.

D.P.

"This is a clean and pleasant cafe. It is well lighted. The light is very good and also, now, there are the shadows of the leaves."

- Ernest Hemingway, A Clean Well-Lighted Place, 1933.

"To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle."

- Walt Whitman, Miracles
