Good Life Performance Samantha Singer

The Spatial Experience

The Spatial Experience

As soon as I walked in the Constan's Theatre, I was amazed by its physical appearance. Even before I went in, I never knew that it was connected to the Reitz Union and its beautiful fountain. The stage curtains were open, revealing the church decorated stage and the side props. It reminded me of a movie theatre and I was excited to see what was to come. The walls were tall making the room look large and the audience whispers disappear. The role of Place in the Good Life is essential to comfortability of your surroundings. People feel more confident when they are in a comfortable place.

The Social Experience

The Social Experience

I went to this play with people from my sorority. It made the experience more exciting to go to, and made it seem as if we were going to a movie instead of a play. I picked up all my friends and drove everyone back to the sorority house after to eat dinner. I believe shared experiences enhance the Good Life because you can enjoy things and talk about them together.

The Cultural and Intellectual Experience

The Cultural and Intellectual Experience

Watching the performance helped me develop a new way of understanding my own culture because it allowed me to see how Americans lived in the late 1800s. The central issue of the play was the journey of an underprivileged family trying to change their life by making the eldest son a priest. Before attending the play, I read the short description in Canvas under the Common Activities. The performance really changed my mind on how the factories and the people working in them were back then. I remember Michaud saying that it was the factory that made the poor people dirty, not that they don't take care of their hygiene. It made me look at things with a new perspective.

The Emotional Experience

The Emotional Experience

The Divine: A Play for Sarah Bernhardt provides us an opportunity for catharsis because we watch a young man try to improve his current circumstances by leaving his harmful past in attempt to creating a better lifestyle for his family. During the second half of the play, Talbot reveals and finally tells the reason why he got in a fist fight and stole silverware from his initial school. We found out that he had been abused by his old priest for 5 years. This was a cathartic moment for Talbot because he was finally able to tell the truth and embody his character.
