Championship Notes NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship

A blazing start led to big offensive numbers at the Sanford Pentagon on Tuesday night. While both Oregon Tech and Spring Arbor (Mich.) traded shots most of the night, it was the Cougars who held-off the Hustlin’ Owls to claim their first NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship.

  • Down two, Spring Arbor surged ahead for good with an 11-0 run midway through the first half; Denver Cade started the run with a three-pointer and championship most outstanding player, Paul Marandet, capped it with a lay-up.
  • Spring Arbor led by nine, 44-35, at halftime; the Cougars shot 70% (7/10) from the arc in the opening half.

  • The Cougars led by as much as 15 in the final half; an 8-2 run by Oregon Tech, finished off by a jumper by Mitchell Fink, made it a four-point game during the final minutes but the Hustlin’ Owls would not get any closer
  • Durnell scored a game-high 32 points, followed by Marandet with 16 points and five assists to lead Spring Arbor
