Year in Review Waldorf High School of Massachusetts Bay • Annual Report 2015-2016

from the Director of School

As the Director of School, it is my pleasure to reflect with you on the accomplishments of our 2015-2016 academic year in our Annual Report. Here, you’ll see evidence of a year of renewal and strengthening of our mission, our program, and our outreach. Faculty departments undertook a year-long process of intentional envisioning, the math and science department was re-structured and enlivened, and the tutoring and guidance support program was strengthened. Our administrative team was restructured to better support our school’s development. Through various student-led committees and activities, our students continued to be engaged participants in building the social life and culture of our school.

Our mission is at the heart of everything we do at WHS. We strive for a balance of structure and flexibility in our curriculum and in our institutional organization, while adhering to the principles of Waldorf pedagogy that guide us and the self-directed governance structure that supports us. We remain committed to creating a socio-economically diverse student body because we know it enhances learning for all students. Our primary intention, through our teaching and engagement, is always to meet and draw out that which is developing within each student. As engaging as all our recent progress is, we are most enthusiastic and encouraged by our daily work with our students. We strive to help them develop ideals, and to gain the courage to act on their ideals within and beyond our school community. Through this, our students build confidence that their contributions are needed and valued in the world. As WHS continues to grow and develop, we are conscious of sustaining these values and we are truly grateful for the generous support that surrounds us.

Please join me in gratitude for the generosity and accomplishments from this past year.

We Learned

through a curriculum that is rigorous, integrated across disciplines, and experiential, and most of all, built on personal relationships.

From the Collegium

One of the defining characteristics of Waldorf education in each of the 1000+ independent schools around the world is that a Collegium of faculty, rather than the school board, determines and oversees the curriculum and teaching. This empowers those in the classroom to actively and creatively adapt the education to the needs of our students and our times.

The 2015-2016 school year was an exciting landmark year for our energetic faculty. Two new highly-qualified math/science teachers collaborated with the two returning math/science teachers to develop an enhanced, more focused math curriculum plan for all four years, coordinated and integrated with the science blocks and the technology plan. The faculty as a whole also developed a five-year plan for all aspects of our educational program. We are especially delighted to welcome our new athletic director and physical education teacher.

Behind these tangible achievements is a sense of true camaraderie and shared purpose. Our dynamic faculty sings and moves together, discusses our courses and our students regularly, and collaborates on courses and program plans with warm-hearted enthusiasm. We are deeply grateful for one another’s support and the generous support of our community as we learn and grow alongside our students.

From the Board of Trustees

Stated most simply, the work of the Board of Trustees is to ensure the long-term health of our school. In its role as fiscal steward, the Board strives for a balance of investment in program, in personnel, and in stability in the form of cash reserves. Part of the board’s role is also to support the commitment of the school to a socioeconomically diverse school community. We can report that in all these areas the school closed the 2015-16 year stronger than we began it.

During the year it was also the Board’s happy task to follow the development of a reorganized administrative team that gained in key areas of marketing and communications, development, and enrollment. The school’s communications and web presence were refreshed and expanded, the board issued a match challenge through Development Office to lead fundraising efforts, and enrollment efforts were expanded through outreach to area schools.

We expanded our board membership with the addition of Robin Nachman, Alumni parent, and Cedar Oliver, WHS faculty member and collegium representative. Ellie Delaney, current WHS faculty and collegium member, retired from the Board of Trustees this year. Ellie has been a Trustee since the independent incorporation of Waldorf High School of Massachusetts Bay in 2004. She served briefly as the Board’s first President and for a longer term as Secretary. While she will be sorely missed, her contribution to the Board’s vision of the school and its future lives on.
