The Alchemist marina cass p. 3

“Because wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure” pg. 128
In the Soul of the world, you follow your heart. The alchemist tells Santiago that his treasure is in his heart. Santiago wants to reach the pyramids to find his treasure, but he already has it in his heart. In order for Santiago to be happy, he needs to find his inner self, his treasure. The alchemist explains that he doesn't need to travel to find happiness when you have yourself to love.Whenever you do follow your heart, its for the better. You find your happiness and what you’re looking for in your own heart. Santiago is looking for his treasure in the desert, but doesn’t realize he already mostly has it in his heart. I have found my treasure, my friends. My best friends make my heart full and happy. I realized that I need to be happy with the opportunities I am given, which are my treasures.
“I am an alchemist simply because I am an alchemist” pg. 126

Santiago is asking the alchemist how he came to know alchemy. His response is vague but I think it reflects an overarching truth that the alchemist is trying to convey to Santiago which is that people try to complicate things more than they need to. They try to explain and interpret the why and how of everything instead of just accepting. These lines seem to hold deeper meaning than what is on the surface. These lines also refer back to what the alchemist was saying about learning through action. He is an alchemist because he does alchemy. It is as simple as that. The idea that “Actions speak louder than words” can be applied to defining who we are, meaning we are what we do. I refer my mom to the alchemist. Like the alchemist, she gives me life changing advice. She wants nothing but the best for me. She encourages me to go outside my comfort zone and believes in me. For that, she is one of the top influencers in my life.

“It is this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what is happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world's greatest lie” pg. 20

King Melchizedek said this quote to Santiago. The meaning of the quote is telling us that the world is different from everyone, also having the ability to shape our futures. He discusses the world’s greatest lie is believing that our lives are controlled by fate. This quote stood up because it is one of the first bits of controversial. Personally, I believe fate has a role in our futures. Relationships are an addition to your personal legend. I took this picture at my house in Hawaii. When I took at the sunset it reminds me of how fate got me there. Opportunities and luck got me to this beautiful place. Fate may not always be this beautiful. Some bad situations happen in life but as long as you have fate that will get better, it will. Fate may bring us some hard lessons, but all for a very important reason. It is difficult to remember that in terrible times but having fate in yourself and the outside world will bring you great pleasure.

“At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives.” pg. 24
The King said this quote to Santiago. The quote is trying to convince us by saying if a personal legend comes along, it could change our dreams. This quote makes me feel like I can accomplish anything I desire. My biggest dream in life is to go off to college and be successful in New York. Every obstacle in my life stopping me from dreaming, can be over looked. I have "to yearn for everything." In-between now and college, anything can happen to change my personal legend.
“Why do we have to listen to our hearts?” pg. 128
Santiago and the alchemist are talking about a person’s heart. The alchemist explains that hearts are emotional and respond to fear/sadness. Santiago wants to know why, if his heart is emotional and not logical. He should pay attention to what it has to say. He explains that if a person knows the ups and downs of their heart, they can know themselves better. My dad has always taught me to have a tough heart. He showed me to be the strongest person alive. I am very sensitive with emotions and my how my heart reacts to problems. My dad tries his hardest to protect my heart from anyone who wants to break it, especially boys.
“The world speaks many languages the boy thought” pg. 86
Santiago is thinking it, the world changes many different things/ideas. It stood out to me because it’s Santiago's actual thoughts. The soul of the world has many different cultures. When I in Hawaii for my dad's wedding, I saw a different culture. I saw teens my age working at their families wild farms or working by the oceans in small shops. I started to think about how different i live my life from them. But then I realized that we all want the same thing in life. All of us take a different path to complete this but still achieve it in the same way. We all want happiness and success. We have all a different idea of success. Whatever it mean to you, the world achieves it. This is The Soul of the World where we can all connect.
